Driving to Canada, do I need a passport?

I'm driving to Canada in a few weeks. Do I need a passport, or will a birth cetificate suffice?

No you do not need a passport. A government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate is just fine. checkout the site below its the Department of Homeland Security website.

"Valerie" gave you the only correct answer.

You don't need a passport when "driving" to Canada from US but you need a driver's license as well as your birth certificate. You need a valid passport when flying.

tuppenybitz
if you are American all you need is a government issued ID (like a drivers license) and a birth certificate

Don't think you need a passport. Remember, the Canadian border officials basically don't care ... it's the American authorities who want some form of ID -- a passport, a newfangled passcard or a driver's licence with photo ID.

Jeff H
No, you only require a passport at present if you are travelling by air in and out of the US. If you are driving you will require a Government Issued Photo ID (i.e. Driver's Licence) and an official birth certificate or certified copy. If you were not born in the US but are now a citizen then you should also bring your citizenship card with you.

yeah, i'm pretty sure you need a passport...i'm going with my family next summer and my mom said that we all need passports

you're lucky I'm nice

passport. if you don't have one, you won't get one in time. it takes more than a few weeks to get one, unless you have a lot of money to spend on expediting it.

Casey K
yes u do
