I'll be visiting Seattle in August and want to take a side trip to Vancouver. I know the requirements are different than the Mexican border. What will I need to get into Canada by driving?
And be prepared to be in line awhile. Some friends of mine crossed the border about a month ago, and it took them a loooooong time to get through because of the line-up.

A passport is always the best however if you are American then your drivers licence and birth certificate should be enough.

A very closely-watched crossing point. Don't try it without a passport, if you're wise. Not necessary in theory, but if you don't have one they may be very awkward and may not let you through. And you'll have a worse time on the way back into the US.

Usually a valid drivers license is enough, but a passport would be recommended as the border agents give you fewer hassles. Especially on the way back into the US, a passport makes things easier.

You'll need photo ID and a birth certificate. Or a passport. Getting into Canada is relatively painless - the customs agents are friendly. Getting back into the US, you'll be given the third degree. :)
If you just take your driver's license you will make them very unhappy, and there is a chance you won't be allowed over. (or back!)
