Family Day. What do you think of that new edition ? |
in the curriculum ?
To me : just sounds like another day off for teachers ( who gets more PA days every year it seems) and is comfortably placed within a 4 day school-off ( PA day on Friday) + week-end.
Some people can afford it. Some people have to take days off work. Some people have to hire extra help..
Should FAMILY DAY be declared an official holiday for EVERYBODY ?
Thanks for your answers. Additional Details I read pros and cons.
Difficult to make a decision. |

I live in Northern Ontario, and am not a fan of Family Day. My kids have missed several days this winter already due to inclement weather, and are actually home today, due to bus cancellations for freezing rain. Not to mention there was a PD day last Friday. I am lucky, I don't work, so I do not need to make arrangements to have my four children watched if I could not take the day off. I know plenty of parents who are not so fortunate. I think its a major waste of a day. |

I think family day is stupid. I'm in university and our reading week is next week anyways so its nothing special for me. My mom's birthday falls on family day this year so at least she gets her birthday off. I still think its a waste of a holiday though. |

Family day is a holiday for everyone. (unless another holiday is given in lieu)
Family day is stupid. From the perspective of a small business, it is one more day that I have to pay all my staff to not work, and even if I wanted to open my stores or office and work it myself I cannot becuase it is a statutory holiday and the cost of the permit is too high to do so.
I hate family day.
When all is said and done, between lost revenues staff expenditures, one day loss of production, family day costs about $8,000 which is a lot of a small business to bear in these economic times, also it is in the shortest month of the year which also stretches the budget,. |

I'm from BC and we don't have Family Day out here.... And, trust me, having no stat from January 1 to Easter is painful.
I would LOVE to have another stat in beginning of the year just to break up the monotony of winter and over three months spent without a long weekend!
I say yes! |

My company took away one of our personal days to give us Family Day..I am not happy about this decision..we don't get this day off anyway, so I think they should not have declared this a holiday...Just another thing the government decided to do on a whim to win votes. |

Keep in mind that people get a bit miffed when other provinces have more holidays. There weren't any public holidays in Ontario between New Year's Eve and Easter, in April. That's quite an expanse, when you think about it...considering there are public holidays in most of the remaining months. Family Day brings Ontario more in line with the other provinces, in terms of the number of holidays, and it affords working folks a day off between New Year's and Easter.
I have no problem with it. In fact, I forgot all about 'Family Day' this year, and while doing my 2009 calendar in January, I remarked to my husband that I couldn't believe the next holiday wasn't 'til April. A day or two later, he remembered 'Family Day' (enacted 2008 in Ontario), and it was a pleasant revelation. I think we're going to go somewhere warm...either that, or skiing. Wahoo!
(Oh, I suppose I should point out that I'm retired, and my husband is a consultant, so he never gets paid for holidays, sick days, vacation, etc. So it really makes no never mind to us, other than it's a day where he "can't" work, thus we make zero income that day. But that's no different than any other holiday, for us. It kind of forces my overworked hubby to take a day off. And that's probably very good for his health.) |
