The TTC is working on a "Trip Planner" feature which is to be added to their website in the next little while. For now though, you'd have to rely on the schedules on their website, their "Ride Guide" maps, or their information phone line as others have already mentioned.
You can also make use of this site which combines Google Maps with the TTC's entire service map.
See: http://crazedmonkey.com/toronto-transit-map
If you put in the location of your starting point or destination, you'll be able to see which bus and/or subway routes service the area, and then map out a trip accordingly.
You may have to flip back and forth between the map I've linked to and the TTC's website for current schedules and clearer route maps, but it's one of the better alternatives I've come across thus far.
Hope this helps. |

The TTC has a web.site that gives all subway, bus and streetcar routes
also there are maps at the subway station. Just get on the TTC and explore Toronto. It's a safe and enjoyable city. I used to work there and I miss it dearly |

When I have route questions I always call the TTC info line at 416-393-info. Just press "0" at the main menu and it will take you to a live operator who will help (during business hours)

I wouldn't rely on schedules they put up. Their website is kind of messed up right now. The best place, I guess, is the schedule they have right next to the bus stops. |
