Canada is the freest country in the world, the US likes to say they are but Canada has more freedom, we're not racist, we don't carry guns, we don't start wars, we're a peace keeping nation, we're respected and liked everywhere we go in the world...just ask an american why they wear a Canadian flag pin when they travel outside of the US, that should tell you...

To avoid a long and complicated answer it's best put this way. The USA is a nation of extremes. From politics to religion to military to police to everything else. Canada is a nation of moderations. (With the obvious exception of hockey!!)

Canada is by far better. The USA ideologically is still in the 19th century.

I have lived on both sides of the border in the past. Think I will stay on the north side of the 49th parallel to live in the future. Why not? I Am Canadian, eh?

Don't get me wrong - I love to visit, have some very good friends there and have some family who live there but I generally find the rampant paranoia a bit tiring and trying. Every border crossing these days is a trial. Deliveries that used to get delivered in two days now take ten days because of the fear of bombs. For someone who grew up when going across the Canada-U.S. Border was no harder than entering the gates of a National Park, the line ups, the searches, the over reactions - too insane for me.

I think the responder who said America is a place of extremes and Canada is a place of moderates is right in a general sense.

And I have seen Americans trying to impersonate Canadians in Europe - have never it work though. The other thing that aggravates me is their penchant for bragging and they cannot help themselves. Europeans pick them out right away because of it.

I think we prefer to be Peace keepers but we are fierce fighters when we need to - one of the main reason why we are always welcomed in Europe where we did some pretty awesome fighting in WWII.

We are not perfect by any means but we are generally more tolerant.

And for the gal who just wrote me privately to call me anti American - I'm not. These are generalizations and I have said that several times. But there are things I dislike about Americans in a general way. Gee! There are things I dislike about Canadians in a general way too.

I have lived and worked on both sides of the border, in or near large urban centers.

I found no real difference between the two countries, at least in the big cities. The standard of living is similar, and (despite what some people say) the taxes are not very different.

There are major problems in big American cities, but also in Canadian cities. We have had our share of murders in Canada (including a loon on a Greyhound bus who recently chopped off another passenger's head). But, for the most part, I feel safe in both countries and rarely have observed and crime.

I've never lived in the states, so maybe it's not fair for me to answer. However, I do think that Canada is a great place to live. People care about nature, health (free health care!), and equality - I'm sure there are many people here who don't, but on the whole I found these things less advertised when I was in America. If you live in the right places (near Toronto or in BC) near the big cities, there's a ton to do. Even if you live up north or out by the ocean somewhere there's so many fun things you can do in Canadian outdoors. Personally, I love Canada, although I'm sure the states has it's benefits as well.

I am not sure if it's considered a better place to live - but Canada does have a universal health plan that is open to all. That's one reason it may be a draw to live in Canada.

Every where you go - there is hate in the world in one form or another. Sometimes it is publicized more in places that you live than other places.

I myself live in Canada and I prefer to live in Canada compared to the States, but if you think about it there isn't much difference. I like Canada because of the free health care system and the fact that Toronto has so much to offer. Me, I'm from a little town in Ontario called Bowmanville and it's 45 minuets away from Toronto, but I was born in Toronto and I say if you ever get a chance to come to Canada, go to Toronto or British Columbia ( the two most beautiful places in Canada, I think) aha. anyways have a good day eh.
