French language in Canada?

French is one of the two official languages in Canada and is the mother tongue of about a quarter of the Canadian population.

1. When do Anglophone students in Canada generally begin to learn French? (In what grade and until when?)

2. When do Francophone students in Canada generally begin to learn English (In what grade and until when?)

3. Do Anglophone schools in Canada teach European French(Standard French) or Quebec French?

4. In Canada, Anglophones generally speak French better than Francophones speak English. True or False?

1. I started learning in grade 4 and it is mandatory until grade 9 (in Ontario). I'm still taking it in grade 12 because I enjoy it so much =]

2. Not sure about this one.

3. In highschool our teacher tends to outline the differences while we are learning so that we know. I'd say that our french education is better suited for use in Canada but we could hold our own in Europe.

4. I'd say that it might just be the other way around. French words tend to translate into the more sophisticated version of English (but some still express a challenge when it comes to proper word selection...same goes for any language I guess).

Hope that helps! =]

I answered these questions with my knowledge of living in Quebec. Other Canadian provinces may be different.

1. In Quebec, you need to take French every year in elementary and high school. It is one of the 3 main subjects. I'm not quite sure about college/university, I guess that depends what you go into. The rest of Canada, it usually depends on the schools. Usually other Canadian provinces only make their students take French until grade 8 or 9.

2. French students learn English all their school lives as well but it is not stressed on them as much as French is stress on English people.

3. In Quebec, we obviously learn Quebec French and I'm pretty sure the rest of Canada does as well.

4. Usually, true. Because like I said, French is stressed more on us that English is on Francophones. Like I said, other Canadian provinces, it may be different. But here, French is considered waaaaaaay more important than English.

1) It depends on where you are. In Southern Ontario, they start learning French in grade four and it compulsary until grade nine, but optional until grade 12. Northern Ontario, they start in grade one.

2) I do not have an answer for you on this one.

3) Quebec French, obviously.

4) False. I took French right through OAC and some in college and still cannot speak it fluently, yet the French people up here ( I live in Ontario, on Quebec border) speak English quite well.

1. It depends on which school board. In my town the seperate school board starts teaching french in grade 1 but the public school board doesn't start teaching it untill grade 4. After grade 9 it is optional if you want to take it or not

#2. I live in ontario so i dont know.

#3. They teach Quebec french

#4. Francophones are WAY better at english then Anglophones are at french

1. I live in Quebec so I don't know
2. We used to start in grade 4 (10 years old), but now they are changing this and making start in grade 1 (6 years old). In grade 1, they do not really have grammar lessons, but they want to at least make the children familiar with the language, so they teach them basic words.
3. I don't really know, but I guess it depends on where your teacher comes from.
4. I think it really depends on the individuals.

My3Boys
1. Depends on the province - typically children in English track schools begin at grade 4. You can opt out in the last few grades. Children in French immersion begin immediately at the Kindergarten level and continue to learn in french until graduation.

2. Not sure on the other way around.

3. Depends where the teacher learned their french. One of mine studied at the Sorbonne, so her french was European. Another had studied in Quebec intensively, so his was Quebecois.

4. False. Depends on the person.

First of all it depends on your school.
If it's a public school then...
1. it's usually from grade 4 to gr 9 (mandatory) however you can continue to gr 12
2. Francophone students usally begin when they're in grade 1 (I think)
3. It all depends on the school you go to (the one I went to they taught both)
4. False, I can't see that happening. Cause anglophone doesn't have the environment to speak french that often, therefore it has to be false. But perhaps there are exceptions.
