Fill up in the US before you cross the border.

Five years ago, the exchange rate was that you could get $1.40 Canadian for $1 US. The prices for things mirrored this (example: minimum wage in Ontario now is $8.75). So if something cost $10 in Minnesota, it cost around $14 in Canada (but both were essentially the same amount because you could exchange $10US for $14CND).

Thanks to the weak dollar (I don't think 'thanks' is the right word), the two currencies are almost 1:1. But the prices don't go up and down because of world currency markets. They change based on what people afford locally in that country.

Same situation as before: something costs $10US and $14CND. But for the American traveler, the $10 thing costs $14US in Canada now (remember the 1:1 ratio). So Americans going to Canada pay more than they used to.

Canadians have it better. They used to pay either $14 Canadian at home, or $10 in Greenbacks ...but that used to be the same amount. Now it's not. A Canadian can buy that same thing in the US for $10, saving them four Canadian dollars.

Gas prices are higher in Canada anyway. I was in Niagara Falls Ontario last week and they were $1.31 a liter. That's around $4.95 a gallon. Like I said: fill up in the US before you cross the border.

The website below will give you an example of the costs around USA and Canada.

For Canadian prices, they are measured in litres not gallons, so a rough idea is to multiple the cost per litre by four.

So when I left my home this morning in Montreal area, gas was at $1.394 per litre (or $5.60 per gallon), but was expected to go up to $1.494 by this evening ($6.00 per gallon).

And according to Yahoo! News, British Columbia will soon have the highest gas prices in Canada. A new 2.5 cent per litre fuel surcharge kicks in July 1st, on top of the existing 3.5 cent surcharge that already exists.

Gas prices range from $1.30 per litre to $1.52 per litre. There are roughly four litres to a gallon so that means gas prices are going to be between $5.20 and $6.00 per gallon.

Im not sure but in the central coast of CA its $4.69 a gal... eeek! Sorry, i know that didnt answer your question i just had to vent...lol...

There's a simple formula for gas prices for Canada. Just divide price per barrel of crude oil by 100. If the price per barrel of oil is $140. Then the price for gas in Canada is $1.4 per litre. :). So currently, the price is $1.40/litre = $5.18/gal. Hope that helps.
