You can cross the border via LAND or SEA with a Valid Government Issued Photo ID and either you birth certificate or citizenship paperwork. So you should be fine. If you are going by AIR then you will need to have a passport no ifs, ands or buts about it.

YA
just be safe take a passport along, the passport is not that bulky.

if you are not sure better safe than sorry and end up in jail

Take your birth certificate too, that should be good for right now. I would check at the border when you cross as to when they will require you to have a passport. The US and Canada are supposed to be coordinating their border crossing requirements and I believe you will need a passport to pass over the US/Canadian border by early 2009.

If you drive that will be fine, as long as it is an official picture id . The rules don't change till 2009. If you fly, you'll need a passport.

I don't know if a citizenship card would work, but your drivers license and birth certificate would work just find as long as you're driving. My husband's done it many times this year and he was just fine. He doesn't even have a passport and he really doesn't want one. What you can do is try to get the number to the border and ask them if your citizenship card would be alright if you didn't have your birth certificate. I had a friend get in with just his drivers license because he forgot his birth certificate at home. That was just last month too.

You'll be taking your chances.

The rules have recently changed. Get a passport.

The US won't even let citizens through the border without a state ID and proof of birth/citizenship and we LIVE HERE.
