You can use your debit card wherever it's accepted, like if the sign says Visa, Mastercard, etc.
Your purchase is charged at that day's exchange rate, which can change from day to day.
Since it's Canada, you probably won't see massive fluctuations in the rate. |

you get charged for the exchange when you buy them (assuming you buy them in Canadian $) and stores don't like taking them and often you get charged a premium to use them you you definitely get charged to cash them in

check with your bank to be sure.
on the back of the debit card you should have the Plus logo which means that it will work out of country.
the exchange rate right now, is about 10 cents on your US dollar.
so for every US dollar, you will get a 1.10.

Yes you can use your debit card in 99% of places just like in the USA. Travellers cheques are a pain in the *** (I'm a cashier and it's a huge hassel.) Check with your bank to find out what it will charge you for each transaction in non-US funds- your bank decides that not the shops in Canada. I find it is easier to just use the ATM a few times and take out enough to keep me going for a while. |

Is it linked to a major credit card carrier, like Visa or Mastercard? If so, you have no problems. Their network is global.
The US charges will be in dollars, and you might get knicked on the exchange rate, but otherwise, no problem. |

I went to London and didn't have a problem at all. Saves you carrying cash and having to deal with merchants not wanting to take travelers checks. |

Debit card is definitely the safest way to go. Most places take it (but not all) and the US/Canadian dollar difference isn't an issue - most banks give you that day's exchange rate.
However, be warned that the US Dollar / Canadian Dollar exchange rate is the worst in years - so your dollars won't go far. |
