Good Morning Calgary?

my husband and I recently arrived in Calgary as permanent residents. We've never been to Calgary before, and we are spending a week here to try and figure out if we should live here with our 2 year old daughter. Can you convince us why we should choose Calgary over anywhere else in Canada?

It's pretty difficult to answer this question when you haven't described what you're looking for in a city.

For myself, I've lived all over Canada, and some other parts of the world. I was born in Montreal, grew up mostly in the province of Nova Scotia and went to university in Kingston, Ontario.

I've only been in Calgary for 3.5 years, but it's my favourite city anywhere. The people are incredibly friendly, there is great camping, hiking and skiing are nearby, and the city has lots to offer -- everything I could ever ask for.

I love it here. And I suspect that if you get out and see the city during your week here, you just may fall in love with it as well.

Calgary is the best city in Canada! Well, actualy it's the third most expensive...but it is really "Green" and environmentally concious. Lots of good schools, lots of fun stuff to do, lots of gorgeous parks. Transit is excellent, people are really friendly. The university is world-class and there are three other really good post-secondary schools. The zoo is great and Heritage park is really interesting. There are jobs to be had.

Calgary is a bit warmer than Edmonton.

When My ex and I took off in a Greyhound, our destination was originally Calgary, not Edmonton. When we got to Calgary from Vancouver...we couldn't find any housing at that time. We stayed in a motel for 4 days looking for housing (10 years ago). He showed me U of A...beautiful university, I find that Calgary is cleaner than Edmonton.

My ex and I went up to Edmonton after 4 days. We got housing right away...within that day...My ex mother in law lives in Airdrie. I prefer BC myself though. I live in BC...

This is a beautiful part of alberta with the mountains so near by, but if you can afford to live here, then you will probably love it. I myself love it, but find it a little over the top for housing prices.

to the comment above mine, yes our pricing is insane, but when you live in any City you are just another face. I come from a very small town in northern alberta, and it is hard for small town folks to deal with the city, but it's not all bad. Besides, now that my house has gained huge amounts of value since we bought it, when we sell it, we are comming way out ahead. then we are going to take all that easy cash we got and move to Saskachewan and retire, so.... who's laughing now!!! sorry, didn't mean to be rude, but you have to admitt it's not a bad idea.

If you really need a chance to get started in your career, go Calgary!

If you like a young atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for finding your special someone, go Calgary!

If you appreciate a dynamic setting with rapid constant growth and everything new and changing, go Calgary!

If you need more certainty in your life, are afraid to go out too far on a limb and invest in property at what seems like a risky price of entry even though it should be a good longer term thing, go elsewhere!

If you need more, go here!

It will be worth it.

I'm a born and raised Calgarian and I can't tell you to get the heck away from this city fast enough.

My husband is an immigrant who just recieved his Permanant Residence and I have a young daughter and we cannot find work in Sask. fast enough to get out of here. The housing and rent is out of control, the health care is poor at best (went through pregnancy with no dr. as I wasn't an important enough case i.e. I wouldn't bring them in money) the school systems are overcrowded, if you want to put your daughter in daycare you'll have to apply now to get in 2 years from now.

Yes, you have work here...however I argue the pay isn't that great since you have to make 93,000 to qualify for a mortgage for an average house here.

As an immigrant, I would NOT suggest Calgary. It is not the best way to start out.

I am convincing you not to live in Calgary. I was born and raised in SK. (I'm sure you are aware of the SK vs. AL war) I dislike Calgary due to the government. Here we are union friendly, and Calgary is not. Car insurance is through the roof there. There is no government restrictions on rent....therefore Landlords are cashing in on extreme prices of rental property. Housing costs are atrocious. Yes, everybody is cashing in on great jobs with high wages...however when you have to pay so much to put a roof over your head....AND pay for health insurance...what is the advantage? Your no where better then you were b4 you made so much money. Cost of living is way to high. I find the people in Calgary are snotty. You blend in and become a no one. Another face in the crowd. A number. They do not take care of their less fortunate. There are many homeless. I chose to avoid the hustle and bustle of a large city, and hate public transportation, which is the norm there. Welcome to the land of opportunity. I wish you luck in the boom, hate to be living there when it crashes, and it will, in time.
