Don't be scared. Edmonton is like one big small town. Yes, there are areas that are unsafe, but that is true for every city. Before your parents pack up and leave, have them go to Edmonton Public, or Edmonton Catholic schools. You and your parents should look through the catalogue of choices for schools. Edmonton has open boundaries, so you can go to any school you want, in either system. (Yes, non-Catholics may attend the Catholic system). Edmonton has an incredible amount of choice in the type of school. If you want fine arts, you go to Victoria. If you want Canadian studies or hockey school, you go to Vimy Ridge. There's French immersion, and other language schools. It looks as if you are high school age, so you can attend a small high school like Vimy, or a large one with lots of options, like Harry Ainlay. If you are unsure of the school you are interested in, all the schools' principals are more than happy to give you and your parents a tour of the school.
Malls are malls are malls. They are filled with the same stores and services you have in Windsor. Houses look the same - suburban houses look like suburban houses. Old houses look like old houses. I don't know about transportation in Windsor, but bus service is do-able, but yucky, or so my kids tell me. I take public transit too, and it's not the greatest at night.
The biggest challenge you will have is leaving your friends behind and having to make new friends. When you go to school in the fall, join clubs and groups at school, and you will soon find new friends, and maybe new interests. Remember that many of them will be attending new schools too and are likely as scared as you. |

I live in Edmonton too! I wouldn't worry too much about it, when its your first time here, there are tons of things to do! West Edmonton Mall is huge, if you like shopping you'll love it, theres an amusement and waterpark there too! It'll take you a while to find your way around though, but its fun! The schools are fairly good too. How old are you? For high schools, I went to Jasper Place, it was a really nice school, lots of things to do there, the thing I loved best was the spirit that the school had with football and different sports, alot of the teachers were awesome as well. They offered alot of options too. If you are thinking about colleges/universities, the U of A, from what I've heard is a great palce to go. Most of my friends are still at Grant McEwan College, and all of them loved it. You'll meet lots of people really fast in your classes and stuff, so I wouldn't worry about that. There are lots of cool clubs and things to go and do here with your friends! Lots of nice places to hike near the river, if you are into that. The places with the most crime is probably the north end and then the mill woods area, but any city has that! Where are you coming from? Family from Ontario talk about how more clear our sky is, and they love it here more...so welcome! Any other questions? |

I lived in Edmonton for a few years, don't worry, it's the easiest place I've ever had to move to. By easy I mean the people there are great. It does get pretty cold in the winter, and pretty hot in the summer, but it's not that bad. Edmonton has, obviously, the largest mall in the world, West Edmonton Mall, it's really nice. But there is also South Gate, North Gate and Kingsway Mall, as well as South Edmonton Common which has a lot of outlet stores. The schools are great, very well respected on a national scale, the University of Alberta is there and it's one of the highest ranking Universities in Canada. The houses are what you'd expect anywhere else. There is a lot to do out there, really nice lakes not too far away, skiing in the winter, Whyte Avenue is really great, it has a lot of bars, it's the night club scene for sure. But during the day there are some great little stores along there for shopping. Jasper Ave is the downtown core, there isn't much to do there except work! Transit is the best I've ever seen in Canada. The LRT is there train system and it's so easy to use, it's ridiculous. Buses run every five to ten minutes, it gets cold in the winter so they bloody well have to! Driving is a breeze, all the streets are numbered. Streets run North to South, and Avenues run West to East. Streets start out in the south and just simply count up every block, so you have 1st Street, then 2nd Street, all the way up to 333 St or however high it goes. Avenues go West to East in the same fasion. You'll have intersection like 85 St and 55 Ave, so you can just count streets and avenues to get where you need to go. So you can always know how to get back home by counting down the streets and avenues, it all works on a grid formation, VERY simple. Well that's about it for info on Edmonton, I loved it there, I plan on moving back sometime. I hope you enjoy it, good luck!! |

Their schools are great (with the exception of the one that has metal detectors and cops posted at it, but thats only 1 of a large number lol; and surprisingly it ISN'T the one that's downtown lol)...ironically the HS that the "rich" kids go to is in a not so great neighbourhood way across town lol.
Their shopping is alright (piece of advice not too many locals hang out at West Edmonton Mall...and it's not really all that safe at night as it is a gang stronghold...I used to hang out there on weekends and it isn't too bad but I wouldn't make a habit of hanging out there at 2AM by myself you know?).
Watch out what neighbourhood your in though...some are safer than others (but every place has their "bad parts" right?). There's some not so nice neighbourhoods but even their worst neighbourhood isn't as bad as other cities bad side.
As for the houses...well they range same as anywhere else...we have the old mansions, new mansions, apartments, condos, townhouses, average houses, older houses, rowhouses, etc...some are maintained some aren't, just depends on the neighbourhood really.
Seriously though look up Edmonton on Google and it will bring up a ton of useful sites with info for "locals" such as schools, etc etc. |

Edmonton's a great place to live... I was raised here, and after doing a lot of travelling around the country and the world living in lots of different places, I chose to come back here.
Check these websites for some information on your new place... and welcome to Edmonton! |

Edmonton's a nice city and it's pretty easy to get around in (I live about an hour away). The best part for me is the shopping... you're going to love it. There's Whyte Avenue that has lots of cool little stores, and Kingsway Mall is pretty good, then of course there's West Edmonton Mall (biggest mall in the world), where you could probably shop for about 12 hours straight if you wanted to. :)
Good Luck! |
