I've been to the province of Quebec, but not Quebec City. Only to Montreal, would love to visit Quebec City. People do speak English.

Evan
Yep, people speak English. I have always heard that the French Canadians are rude to non French speakers, but this is not so. They are in fact very friendly people, and as long as you ask them politely if they speak English, you shouldn't have a problem. I was in Montreal, Quebec City, and up into the Laurentian Mountains (around La Mauricie National Park), and most people spoke excellent English. In Montreal, there is also an English speaking neighborhood.

I drive though Quebec every year and we ahve no problems with people speaking english to us. even if they don't speak english they will do their best to help you anyway they can by either finding someone who speaks english or hand gestures (kind ones!)
If you are going to be going out of the major cities like Montreal area or quebec City the i do suggest to get a small english to french dictionary to help just in case, but in the cities english can be found quite easily.

I live in Quebec, and here's the thing. Everyone here has had to learn English at school, so most people will know the basics (though some will be scared and unable to answer you). If you go to Quebec City and Montreal you will not have any problem. Almost everyone in Montreal is bilingual, and many in Quebec City also. Tourism is a very important part of our economy, so we have to speak English pretty well, if we want to work in public areas. Just be patient, and nice, and everyone will do their absolute best.

If you get a bit more off the beaten track, you might encounter more non-English speaking people, only because they don't often get the opportunity to practice it. But the same schooling applies, so they should have some basics.

I worked in the touristic area of Quebec City for 4 years, and I never heard a single tourist complain about not being able to communicate because of the language.

Have a nice trip!

Yes, they may give you a hard time but there's lots of places where English is spoken. I have been there several times and never had the least bit of difficulty.

i have lots of family in quebec and not many people speak english..sorry! quebec is awesome regardless! :)

I was there just last week! You don't need to know French to be able to get around just fine. It's hard to tell who speaks as their native language. Going to France you would reasonably assume everyone speaks French!

Many people do speak a variety of languages in Quebec. Some parts of the province are less likely to be bilingual but for the most part, someone will be able to help. If you;re headed to Montreal for example, don;t worry about it. The people there are more than willing to help no matter what language you speak.

I've lived there and travelled through many times since.

Yes in Montreal.
Maybe in Quebec City.
If you go to a small town on the St. Lawrence they're going to look at you like you're from Mars.
