Hello Canada, I want to win an argument and I need your help?!?!? |
Me and a friend (UK) are comparing Canada (my favourite) with America (my friends favourite and my least favourite!!!) now I know that it doesn't take a scientist to figure out that America is one big place with a lot of big things but I want you to tell me what Canada offers that wins over America.
Please tell me, I just can't bear people recognising everything to be "American" when it is actually Canadian... |

1) We have universal medial care
2) We have gun control - and lower crime rates
3)We have one federal criminal code unlike the US that have state codes and then federal laws. That's why some states have a death penality and some don't.
4) We are part of the commonwealth and Queen Elizabeth is our Queen too.
5) We got self government from UK peacefully rather than by revolution.
6)We understand English humour and spell colour with a U.
7) And my favorite Battle Star Galactica is filmed in Vancouver. :)
8) We have the worlds tallest free standing structure -The CN Tower in Toronto
9)We have one of the worlds biggest Film Festivals - The Toronto International Film Festival
10) Banting and Best were Canadians - They discovered insulin

It starts with the formation of these two nations. America was born of Revolution, and the rockets red glare. In Canada a bunch of leaders went to an Island ( P.E.I ) sat around, got drunk and decided to form a confederation of Provinces. They built a railroad from sea to sea, and started minding our own business. We offer a place where the best of everyone can come and be the best we can. The States is a melting pot where everyone is encouraged to be the same. Here in Canada we tolerate and appreciate the true freedom to become what we want. I have travelled to numerous countries and people don't really know what a Canadian is, which is great because we do not strive to be American nor do we feel a need for a specific identity. We just are, simply Canadian, and Proud of it. |

1) we have a reputation for being polite, which American tourists take advantage of by pinning Canadian flags patches to their luggage
2) we do realize there are other countries out there that contribute to global economy
3) our culture is more "European" - we encourage multi-culturalism instead of a "melting pot"
4) hockey, lacrosse, and basketball (ok, so the last is now more popular in the US, but it started up here, "invented" by a Canadian!)
5) Superman was created by a Canadian |

Apple pie was also invented by a Canadian. We beat the Americans at war(they thought they could take us over in the middle of the night way back when, and we sent them packing!!) Canadians are recognized and appreciated so much for their part in the liberation of Holland in WWII,that to this day, they will give you the shirt off their backs for us or let us into their homes (been there, done that) Back in the 60's we developed a fighter plane, the Avro Arrow, that was superior to anything the Americans had,and was so advanced that some of it's technology is being used today. (Although the "official" reason it was scrapped was because it was too "expensive" - yes,an American made that decision) We have better health care, our military, although not as active is higher trained (we actually send our guys down there to train their guys ;)) We produce more oil than they do, and they hate us for that. We have William Shatner, Alex Trebec, Pam Anderson. We have hockey, basketball, lacrosse. My name is Mike D,and I AM CANADIAN!!! |

Well let's see. We have less people, more space, cleaner air, amazing scenery oh yeah and nice people....
Ok ok I know America isn't all that bad. They have some nice people too. But in all honesty I wouldn't trade living here for anything in the world. All put together Canada is the best place there is. |

That's a tough question. I can tell you two things they don't have in Canada: President George W. Bush and the war in Iraq. |

All of the above, plus we have better comedians (most of whom go to the USA after they become popular).
Plus we have 2 1/2 times the rate of immigrants as does the USA but we have almost no problems.
The USA Supreme Court so far has supported the post 9-11 American Gestapo Guantanemo and other secret prison without habeus corpus laws. Our Supreme Court ruled a similar Canadian law to be unconstitutional and ordered the prisoners (there were only 5, compared to the Americans' having hundreds) released on bond pending trial.
Plus we are more tolerant. Gay marriage is law here without problems, and we do not suffer the crazy far-right conservative Christian religious wackos that have so much influence south of the border (you should listen to the American Christian and political right radio stations that unfortunately have signals strong enough to come in here. They are SCAREY!) .
We have better regular brand lagers and ales (though I must admit that the USA - at least that part close to us in New England and New York, has far more delicious micro, specialty and artisan ones). |

Canada is a vast very big country, we have space and beautiful land and a lot of water where you can go swimming, boating etc..Our people are very polite and there is every culture you can think of. Our cities have everything you could need. Great entertainment, fine dining etc. If you love shopping, Edmonton has the biggest mall in the world and in Montreal there is the biggest underground shopping. All the fast food joints are here and even one that Americans don't have and many rave about the coffee lol and that is Tim Horton's. We have great beer and we love our hockey! Montreal is a great mixture of French and English cultures it is very European. And for the guys....they always say we have the best looking women :) |

Socialized medicine would be a start. The Canadian falls (Horseshoe 180 ft.) is much better than the 'american' falls 120 ft.
We have a parliamentary system of government where the leader of the government must be elected by his/her party and also by the people of thier riding. We have a governor general. Our senate is appointed not elected. |

We got Beer, Hockey, Canadian Bacon, Free Healthcare and The Tragically Hip.
The states has war, everybody hating them, A terrible government, and well just the fact they are american.
As you can clearly see Canada by far outshines, outclasses, and outsmarts the united states. |

Canada's political system is much more transparent, the government is much more accountable.
The people are better represented; a better democratic system.
Society is top priority; Canada recognizes that Society is not a jungle where the weak can be eaten by the strong. It helps them.
Its culture is healthier and people are more friendly. they accept diversity and multiculturalism. |
