Pros and cons of those cities:
Vancouver pros- laid back place in general, warmer than any of the other cities you mentioned, always busy, downtown is fabulous, very gay-friendly, excellent location
Vancouver cons- very violent in general (the streets), traffic really truly sucks there because many people who live in the lower mainland work in Vancity so it is always busy in a bad aspect as well
Edmonton pros- growing economy
Edmonton cons- (this is biased because I'm Calgarian and there is a huge competition between Calgary and Deadmonton as we call it) it is a very violent place as well, much of the city is very industrial, winters are colder than you'd care to imagine
Calgary pros- (yay Calgary!!!) fastest growing economy in the country, many nice parks, jobs are extremely high paying (my friend's kid is 17 and gets $14/hour at Tim Hortons because they are so desperate for employees), generally a very rich city, friendly people for the most part
Calgary cons- growingly more violent, very much gang violence but it's still managed to stay inter-gang and no civilians have been gang targets yet, drugs are quite an issue in all Canadian cities and Calgary is no different, housing is unbelievably expensive but if you can afford to get into the market you'll make a lot of money. I bought a house there last January and when I flipped it in August it had went up $150,000 dollars.
I haven't been to Toronto or Ottawa but from what I hear Toronto is the most American city in Canada, most similar to American cities I mean in general. Unfortunately they are also known for having the rudest people (again this isn't everyone, but in general). Traffic in Toronto is supposed to be the worst in Canada so be prepared. Ottawa I've heard almost all good things about, but again they are a little more arrogant because Ottawa runs the country (same as Washington,DC for the USA) and makes sure everyone else knows that. Living there though I've heard is great and have two friends from there.
FYI - if you vote liberal don't voice that too strongly anywhere in Alberta, it's a hardcore conservative place |

There are no rats in Calgary, so a New Yorker could get very homesick there. |

Vancouver is the "nicest" city, but the ecomomy in Calgary is booming. |

London, Ontario is very good, things are booming 25 miles east in Woodstock. |

Vancouver overall, Ottawa second. Calgary and Edmonton, though experiencing an oil patch inspired economic boom, are just ugly, sprawling, skyscrapered American type cities of which is said "There is no there, there." |
