If your class is going by land, which it probably is, then you need a birth certificate and have your parents sign a permission slip provided by the school. That is what is required if you are under 18. If over 18 then you need a birth certificate and drivers license.
You don't need a passport unless you fly.
Eventually you will need a passport. But not yet. This link is accurate info, except for the date requiring passports for all transportation says "As early as summer 2008" because they are in the process of changing that until summer of 2009. |

Are you crossing by land or air? If you are going by air you need a passport. If by land, you just need a drivers license and a birth certificate. |

Yes, you need a passport. If it's urgent, you can get one in as little as 5 days, but you have to start the paperwork right away and go to the passport office in person, and pay about double the fee ($87 for passport and $70 for urgent delivery...less for children.)
It mostly depends on how much time you have before the trip, and whether you have the time to get a passport.
Good luck! Chicago is great. I lived there for a few years. |

If you have no documents, then you cannot get into the USA. That means a Birth certificate, drivers license and Canadian passport. |

Most Canadian citizens and many citizens from Visa Waiver Program countries can come to the U.S. without a visa if they meet certain requirements. Visa waiver travelers from ALL 27 Visa Waiver Program countries must present a machine-readable passport at the U.S. port of entry to enter the U.S. without a visa, otherwise a U.S. visa is required. See important information about the 10/26/05 digital photograph and 10/26/06 e-passport requirements for VWP travelers. Learn more. Other foreign citizens will need a nonimmigrant visa.
