It may be a matter of where you can afford to live in Toronto. Its pretty expensive so a lot of people choose to live outside of Toronto where they have access to via rail or the Go train to commute in and out of downtown. It cost about $8 to get from the Oshawa, for example, to downtown Toronto. http://www.gotransit.com/

As with all large cities it is considered that it is safer in the more expensive resedential areas than it is in the lower income areas. (and that's a whole different debate)

Hello from Toronto:
Some of your answers above are just being mean to you and sarcastic. Not all Torontonians are like this.
Now for your answer- If you like, go to an area called North York. It is Central North Toronto. Very nice area and good people and less expensive rent than right downtown. I suggest close to a subway if you don't have a car. Areas like Yonge and Sheppard or Yonge and Finch or Yonge and St.Clair also Yonge and Eglington. Stay away from an area near Jane and Finch.(Not good)

Good Luck and Welcome to Toronto

Know-it-all
The fact is crime in Toronto is dropping year after year. People get the impression it is unsafe because the media tends to hype-up the little crime there is. A safe city does not make for interesting news - does it?

"Good evening, and thank you for joining us at Xchannel News. Tonight we have pictures of ducks swimming in the local pond for you viewing pleasure. Enjoy!"

Some of the answerers were joking with you. I know that there are some good things about the areas, so I hope I don't hurt the feelings of people who live there, but there is a good bit of crime in the Jane and Finch, Flemingdon Park/Thorncliffe (Don Mills and Overlea), and most of the east part of downtown (excluding St Lawrence Market area which is nice) and some parts of Scarborough. Midtown (around Yonge and St Clair), North Toronto (around Yonge and Eglinton), and most of North York (excluding Jane area) are fairly low crime. Honestly, Toronto is not that bad in terms of crime, but I wouldn't keep my door unlocked in any big city. There's a great website www.settlement.org for people settling in Ontario. Good luck on everything

Welcome to Canada. The best and safest places in Toronto are
the Jane-Finch area or down at Regent Park. You don't even need to lock your doors in those places.
