My favorite hike is Black Tusk in Garibaldi Park, which is just a little bit past Squamish. It will take you all day, and it is definitely a challenge. There's few different hikes you can choose from there I usually hike to Garibaldi Lake which is gorgeous. It's 9km to the lake and will take you three or four hours to get there. Mind you, approximately 6 of those km are uphill via switchbacks. You can also hike up to the alpine meadows, or all the way up to the "black tusk" which is a volcanic plug on top of the mountain.

I just came back from Greendrop and Lindeman lake. It's great up there, the fishing superb. Like the others I'd recommend Black Tusk or the surrounding areas.

Concerning bears:

1. The way to tell black bear poop from grizzly poop. The black bear poop is filled with berries while the grizzly poop is filled with bells worn by hikers attempting to warn the bear.

2. You don't have to be able to out run the bear, just be faster than everyone else with whom you hike.

I envy you so much - living and hiking in BC. You are so lucky!

If you want to go on a good, but tough hike, try the Grouse Grind, the views at the top are fabulous.

kokuotaku is right. black tusk is exceptional!! i hiked that 2 years ago. it is a tough hike uphill, but for the amazing lake up there, it WAS REALLY WORTH IT! i think it took us all day to hike up and down. and it is definitely one of the most memorable hike i have ever done.

don't go into manning park now. the fire is gone out of control. they are trying to evacuate the residents..

Yeah -- you don't even have to go that far. Cypress Mountain, just past West Vancouver, provides awesome hiking. The 'Singing Hills' give you a 20km walk along the ridge of the mountain. It's fantastic!
There is good hiking on Grouse Mountain, and on Mount Seymour. Just depends on how 'wild' you want your hike to be. Squamish is famous for "The Chief" which is Mecca for rock climbers from all around the world. You can see it from the road, and there is almost always someone on the way up, or hanging from ropes in an overnight camp.
You can hike up behind The Chief - MUCH easier than going up the face, but still an exciting trek.
Hopefully you won't have a bear problem as there are tons of berries around to keep them happy.
Enjoy, and remember the fire ban is on in the forests here. We don't need any more forest fires!

Hopefully you will run into bears...then you know you are out of the city....Coquitlam alone has a bear count of 84 bears and we have 130,000 people.....bears are neat....just respect their space....Manning Park has a major fire there now....too bad....
