Yes, it can be cold outside. Almost every major city in Canada except Vancouver, British Columbia (BC) has an average winter temperatures around -5 to -17 degrees Celsius. That sounds cold if you're from a warmer place, but truthfully, most Canadians don't spend too much time outside. You go from warm, insulated house - to car/bus - to warm, insulated work and back again.

Because of the interiors of buildings being so warm, many people only wear a wool jacket (I like longer ones that go to mid-thigh), scarf and gloves. This protects them for short-term exposure to the cold without being too heavy or hot inside public buildings i.e. shopping malls.

If you're going to be waiting at bus stops, you should add on a hat and warm boots (leather outside, warm fuzzy inside, and don't buy steel toe boots).

If you plan to do outdoor events, sports or spend some time outside you should think about buying a proper jacket, legwarmers on top of everything else mentioned above. Many sporting goods stores in Canada sell jackets for skiing and hiking. I like these jackets. Goose down jackets are also very warm.

Whatever you buy, make sure your footwear is waterproof if possible. Leather can be waterproofed with some sprays. Often you have slushy snow mixed with powdery snow and slush will soak your feet quickly.

I would say most Canadians have two sets of winter clothes. One for everyday, brief exposure to cold, and a set for long-term cold. Maybe you should start by buying your everyday set, and wait until you need the heavy-duty gear.

Are you confusing 0 degrees centigrade = freezing point and 0 degrees Fahrenheit which is 32 degrees below freezing.

Weather is measured in Centigrade in Canada.

Get some good boots and a coat and gloves, dress in layers and carry on normal life.

Make sure you wear layers, you can always take layers off to cool off - but you dont want to be stuck without extra layers when its really cold.
Make sure you bring mittens and your tooque

Good coat with a hood,an a good pair of boots.

It depends what you will be doing here.

If you will be walking around the city, where you can step out of the cold periodically, a warm coat, boots, mittens and a hood, tuque or ear muffs will be fine.

However if you are planning to be outside in the snow for long periods you will want to have layers of clothing and maybe add nylon pants to keep your legs dry.

0 degree aint that cold. just wear normal fall cloth. if it goes down to -20, wear a sweather and a winter coat, winter boots, hat, gloves and scarf.. nothing more.
The coldest I've seen is -48 two winters ago in Ottawa

just wear your average winter clothes. i've lived in canada my whole life. i just wear jeans, a shirt, sweater, and a coat. wear some mittens too and if you really want, throw a scarf on. but trust me. its not as cold as everyone says it is. it doesnt always get blizzard-y. right now we have little bits of snow in random parts of the city. the sky has been very clear this whole week. we only had one snowy week (last week) and that was it. Our autumn was absolutely gorgeous. I live in Calgary by the way. Northern parts of the USA that touch the Canadian border are pretty much just as cold as where most of Canada's population is. Unless your moving to an Alaskan altitude, you dont really need to worry about climate too much.

We get beautiful summers here. sometimes it may feel too hot. and you definitely need to use air conditioning here in the summer. we get all four seasons, so chillax :)

Make sure skin is covered, especially hands and ears. Find a "toque" and layer your clothing, T-shirt, sweater and jacket. STAY DRY. If you're outside for extended period, 30 min or longer I find a single pair of wool socks, no under sock and just one pair you're feet will stay pretty warm provided you're at least moving.

Coming from SK where -40F is not uncommon.

Don't forget that in Canada temperature is measured in celsius, "O" degrees celsius is the same as 32 degrees fareinheit. Not really all that cold. Just dress in layers and wear gloves, a hat, warm sox and you'll be fine.

There is no such thing as "0" degree climate. Canada is NOT that cold! Of course, that depends where you go, and where you are from, but it really isn't that much colder than the northern US. Vancouver, for example, is much less cold than much of North Dakota, and Toronto isn't much colder than Buffalo.
