How are jobs in Canada for Americans who don't speak French? |
I can't get enough money to move over the ocean but North would be just as good. I know you used to be able to work in Canada without a permit or anything, but don't know about that now. I am a single mom looking for a better life for my son. I love America, but this is quickly turning into upper Mexico and I want out before it gets too much worse. I am thinking of Nova Scotia or Alberta. I have a BS in Communications. Any advice? |

First of all you must obtain a temporary work permit and/or must apply to become a permanent resident in order to live and work legally in Canada, It's a long process (as far as I know) check out the link below for more information.About the language,English is the majority language in all provinces except Quebec, where it is the preferred language of only 10.5% of the population. Only 3.6% of Canada's English-speaking population resides in Quebec mostly in Montreal.

You will now need a permit. But you don't need French, especially in Alberta or Nova Scotia. French is mostly used in pockets of Canada, the biggest being Quebec. So it is really handy there, and then areas close to there. Then it is beneficial for Federal Government jobs. But anything else it's not needed. |

You'll need a permit to work in Canada now. You won't find that you need French for very many jobs in Canada. The exception would be in some federal government jobs where being bilingual will get you a better shot at some positions. Outside of Quebec, parts of northern Ontario and parts of New Brunswick, very little French is spoken in Canada. Most of the provinces have a pocket or two that's French-speaking, but I have lived in BC for over 30 years and don't hear it spoken from one year to the next. Alberta is probably most like the US in many ways(ranches and oil), but Nova Scotia is lovely too. Alberta at this time offers more jobs but has a higher cost of living. |

The only place you'd need french is Quebec, or some federal government jobs.
Alberta is the LAST place you'd need french. Nova Scotia's fine with just english also. Make sure to check out the cost of living before you move...Calgary's is sky high right now. |

Very few people in Alberta speak French. While Canada is "officially" bilingual very few of us actually know the language.
There are a lot of jobs in Alberta but the housing market is tight and expensive at the moment. |
