How big is Toronto? |
I've never been and I'm trying to find hotels near the "hub" of the city, downtown, and I'm not sure if it's GIGANTIC or not. How long would it take, driving, to get from one end to the other? How many miles across?
Thanks in advance. |

Toronto has North America's largest public transit system after New York City. GO Transit moves people in and out of the city, while two airports service the skies above. Toronto gets its water from Lake Ontario, 8th largest fresh-water lake in the world. Above ground or below ground, here are some facts about what's moving around in, on and under Toronto:
there are 10,033 different streets or, 5,365 km of road (streets, expressways, ramps and laneways) covering 27.4 per cent of the city's area

the 337 km of railway, rapid transit rails and hydro corridors make up 2.3 per cent of the city's area
34.8 per cent of the city's area is residential; 7.8 per cent industrial, 2.3 per cent commercial, 7.3 per cent institutional (schools, universities, churches and cemeteries)

It is the 6th largest metropolitan area in North America.
It is 7125 square kilometers.
It's population is approx 5.5 million.
Driving across will take time because traffic is almost always a problem. |

Driving from one side to the other could take anywhere from half an hour to a couple of hours, depending on what route you take and what time of day it is, and it's hard to say exactly where the city ends, in driving terms, because there are a lot of suburbs that run together. I honestly don't know, off the top of my head, how many miles it is from one side to the other. It sounds like what you really want is to make sure you don't end up in a hotel too far from downtown.
Get a map, you should be able to find one on the net. Look for Queen Street, runs east-west not too far north of the lake. Look further north for Bloor Street, also runs east-west. Those two streets are a mile and1/4 apart, that will give you some idea of distance.. Look for Yonge Street, runs north-south right through the downtown core. The subway runs along Yonge Street, and another runs along Bloor Street. If you find a hotel anywhwere near those two subway lines, you can get downtown within a half an hour, give or take. If you walk fast, you can walk from Bloor Street to the waterfront in half an hour. And transit through the downtown core is excellent compared to most North American cities. There is also an intercity train called the GO train which runs along the lakeshore from Union Station downtown near the water, so a hotel further out but near that might be quick for getting downtown. |

Toronto or GTA(surrounding cities included) is approximately 20Km X 10Km. Toronto by tself is about 5Km X 5Km. not a very big city.
Driving time from one end to the other depends on the wheather and traffic conditions. On a good day (accident free) 15 minute to from one end to the other. On a really bad day, it could take 2 hours just to move a couple of miles. |

About 35 miles east-west, and 25 minutes north-south. Takes about half an hour to drive on the highways with little traffic.
A great place I would suggest is Pantagous Hotel. It's smack in the middle of downtown Toronto, and if you book online it's $150 for a night for a 800 sq foot suite...nice |
