I am not sure that it is entirely the responsibility of the country being visited (be it Canada or anywhere else) but the people visiting. They need to make themselves more culturally aware, and less ignorant to what is going on around them.

As a traveller and an employee of the tourism industry, I know that making the effort to understand someone else's, culture, or language is half the battle and the effort and interest is sincerely appreciated.

I visited Calgary recently and found the people to be great. I absolutely loved my trip and the people I met there. Just keep doing what you're doing!

I lived in Montreal for a year, and the only stuck up people I encountered were the french speaking population. I was trying to learn french, but sometimes I didn't know a word or phrase and asked in english. Man did I get rude remarks and looks. I just think they need to be a little more understanding and not so rude to the native english speakers. We're not diseased or something.

I can't imagine how!

I visited Toronto a few years ago (~ 2004) and found the people to be exceptionally polite & friendly.

Canadians as a whole are very friendly, don't know what to add to that..

Mr. Smoothie, aka Mr. SmartAss
well, it is kind of difficult to me more polite when we are already considered to be very polite..having said that the Americans should hep themselves and stop acting like pompus *** ijjits...and people would be more polite to them...

The issue of receiving Americans with an open mind is an international one - pretty much everywhere there is a belief that Americans as a whole are rude and ignorant (though I completely acknowedge that many individuals are completely opposite).

The question should be how can Americans improve their reputation world-wide. I think that Canadians are for the most part polite and welcoming as we recognize that every person from the US is different. Its when stereotypes are reinforced that Canadians roll their eyes and want nothing to do with American visitors.

Instead of taking the approach that as the hosts we should put up with bad behavior - you should take the approach that as ambassadors to their country Americans should behave in a manner that counteracts stereotypes.

I don't know, how would you be friendly to anyone? Good hospitality, a friendly smile and hello perhaps.
Maybe follow "The Golden Rule", do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
It shouldn't be that hard should it?
Do Canadians hate Americans or something?

ShaMayMay
Are you speaking about them as a country, helping them out while transitioning to Canada?

Or are you speaking about individuals, just the general population? that's a tough one to answer-you are not going to have every single person like every other person.

Ive only known Canadians coming to America and Ive always been more than welcoming and friendly to host them...I would think they'd do the same for me.

Been there once and felt like a tourist which I was. Was treated good and when I was there they really liked the American dollar. we bought some souvenirs and they wanted US dollars instead of Canadian? Great place, wild and untamed. We were in the city one minute and few minutes later we were in the great wilderness. Scenery was great. I admit though, I felt relieved when we crossed back over into US soil .
