How can ships from the ocean get to Toronto, Ontario?
The come up the St. Lawrence River and on to the Great Lakes via the St. Lawrence Seaway system. They have to pass through a series of locks and canals. This link will tell you all about it, and also gives you a map showing the path of the seaway. Best of luck.
