As someone who is from Winnipeg, I agree.

The politicians keep trying to tout Winnipeg and Manitoba as being this warm-hearted, friendly place full of opportunity and a "booming job market." In actuality, the job market is only booming if you want to work for $7/hour with few benefits in a call centre ... remember when Winnipeg used to be full of factories with high-paying salaries?? Well, that's all gone!! (thank you, NAFTA!!! *sarcasm*).

Still, the one really cool and unique thing about Winnipeg is that with the exception of Toronto, we've probably produced more famous people and more success stories than any other major Canadian city. Think of all the bands, the actors/actresses, politicians and business tycoons who have come from Winnipeg or Manitoba. .... But this leads back to the last part of your question: In a cold, Blue Collar, rough-around-the-edges city like Winnipeg, people naturally strive hard to get out and move on to greener pastures.

Thank you.

Because you'll freeze in the brutally snowy winter or be eaten alive by mosquitoes in the summer.

Everyone is not leaving.
Winnipeg is now at a 3% growth rate. Since the discovery of oil and diamonds in manitoba, I forsee an even higher growth rate soon...

Winnipeg is just like any place, population goes up and down.

Right now the drive is on to move to "booming" Alberta, but soon it will be elsewhere. The Maratimes are starting a big campaign to bring their workers that went West, back home so that will happen soon too. Manitoba will have its time soon.

The grass is always greener on the other side...but once you are out, you miss it and will eventually come back. :)

Where did you get your information that everyone is leaving or wants to leave.

Fred C
What a baloney question! If everybody is leaving, our housing market would not have been so tight that every listed house sold for more than the listing. Many still do. There are enough new homes being built that it is hard to find contractors to do additions, repairs, or jobs like stucco or roofing without waiting.

Lots of people leave in their 20's because they are drawn to the romance of a big city, however, you will notice in your 30's that more than half the people who leave, always somehow for some reason come back. Winnipeg is a great place to buy a house, settle down and raise a family. It's cheaper to live here than in any bigger city and once you get all the bar hopping out of your system, it's a good place to party as well. Personally I like that fact that when I go out, I often see lots of familiar faces.
