How do Canadians celebrate Canada Day? |
I'm an American who will be visiting Vancouver this summer. I'll be there for Canada Day visiting my partners friends. How to Canadians celebrate Canada Day? Is it much like America's 4th of July (picnics, BBQs, fireworks, etc)? Or is it more of just a calender holiday that isn't really celebrated? |

I don`t know about Vancouver but here in Quebec we celebrate it much like you do the 4th of July. Fireworks, parades and lots of fun. |

Don't know much about Vancouver, but a lot of us Torontonians will have a barbeque, a beer and shoot off some fireworks. It's most definitely not just a calender holiday for us. |

Canada Day in Ottawa used to be quite nice with a stroll around the Governour General's Garden Party at Rideau Hall.
Bring your own water to avoid the ten or twenty thousand other people clawing the tables under the awnings though. |

Every city has its own celebrations planned for July 1st, but it is similar to Independence Day weekend in the States, except perhaps a little less patriotic.
You will have fireworks, some sort of events during the day, there is usually a stage with some local singers or even some big names that show up.
For example, I celebrated Canada Day in Montreal one year and we had a day long concert in one of our parks that had the group Extreme, Steve Miller Band, and Bryan Adams (among others).
The next year I was in Ottawa and we saw Blue Rodeo in Roughrider Stadium followed by fireworks on parliament hill (kind of like standing on the Whitehouse lawn)
Most people here use it as an excuse to relax, kick back with friends for a few drinks, a barbecue, and a day off of work.
By the way, here in Quebec, we also have St. Jean Baptiste on June 24th (the weekend before) which is as big or bigger than Canada Day. It is the unofficial day adopted by the separatist cause as "Quebec National Day", even though we are still part of Canada at this time.
Of course, what it usually means is that we get fireworks and drinking for two weekends in a row :-) |
