How do Canadians live with high gas prices???

I know in Canada taxes tend to be a bit higher, but it isn't Europe, where everywhere is well-connected by rail!!!

Higher gas prices don't bother me at all. Where I live, everyone is really considerate of the environment so we used alternative forms of transportation whereever possible: carpooling, carsharing; walking. And because we have always been aware of the effects of carbon emissions, many of us do the other things that are important to decrease emissions: keep tires inflated, keep car maintained, don't let the car idle for more than 10 seconds, etc.

If you already lead a certain lifestyle that does not waste gas/oil, then it's really not a big deal if the gas prices rise. As far as I am concerned, they can continue rising -- the more they rise, the more people will start looking for alternatives.

Criticize away, fellow YA posters! I expect lots of Thumbs-down for that answer.

Many of us have no choice. There's only so much you can do about it, and then you just suck it up.Where I live, the bus system is very minimal. It's so minimal I have trouble imagining who finds it useful. I just combine trips as much as possible, which is pretty much always, and don't drive with a heavy foot.

Speaking as one of those "hyper milers" referred to I use quite a few techniques to moderate my gas usage. I drive slightly below the speed limit when there is other traffic around and much more slowly when I'm pretty much alone on a road. I slow down approaching a red light and leaving a red light I don't gun the engine which is a stupid waste of fuel at any time. I take my foot off the gas and coast, again mostly when I have no one behind me. I also combine trips and make far fewer short trips to buy say a couple of items at the grocery store. I also ride my bike when I can and ride with others in their cars when it's convenient. I drive an SUV and I don't plan to give it up. In fact, I just bought it. I love it but I try to drive it with gas saving in mind. I just pay the gas price; I don't see much point in endlessly carping about it. It's going to go up further, not come down. If it continues to go up I'll think about getting a hybrid like a Prius.

It's not easy in many areas because driving is the only option; transit is really bad or non-existant. Small fuel-efficient cars are not the answer in the winter (they're fine in the summer) because they have no weight on icy roads. Most people don't have a summer car and a winter car, so they drive a truck or SUV all the time. Wages haven't gone up in relation to the gas prices; in fact everything has gone up, you really notice it in the price of food because virtually everything is trucked in. And that's expensive. So we will have to wait and see what happens with fuel prices this high for any length of time. They can't live with these prices for much longer before there is anarchy.

It's not just high gas prices, it's higher prices on everything. It's been that way for many many decades. We are used to it.

In Vancouver... I see way more "hyper-milers" those annoying people who drive so slow and leave a 1/4 mile space in front of them so they can "coast" and start slowing down 1/2 mile before a red light and then when you start off from the red light you almost run into them because they edge forward so slowly and take ages to get up to the speed limit..
it drives me crazy personally.

Canadians have high salaries. The average skilled worker makes between $22 to $30 per hour. A professional or CEOs can make upwards to $75 per hour. The cashiers at Tim Hortons in Alberta make $14 an hour.
