How do most Canadians feel about Europe and Europeans? |
Do Canadians usually have a different view than some Americans? Is the Canadian media interested in what's going on in Europe, or is the focus mostly on your neighbour (USA)? lol
BTW - I'm European (I live in Northern Europe), and I've always been intrigued by Canada, though (sadly) I've never been there. But, I hope to travel there some day. It seems like such a great country.
Thanks. |

Canadians are more involved in issues dealing with its closest neighbour, the USA. In terms of Europe, the countries in particular of focus is England and France. News or European issues does not concern Canadians much, and there isn't a lot of media attention focussed on Europe, unfortunately.
I am a first generation Canadian, myself, and my parents immigrated to Canada from Europe, so European news is of interest and concern to me. Canada being as multicultural as it is, there is a huge populated of European immigrants and these people are concerned with what is going on back home.
You should definitely come to visit Canada, but life is different here than in Europe. I know back home, where my family is from, life seems slower paced, more quality than it is here. Then again, I do live in Toronto so that probably influences my view. Toronto is the financial capital of Canada, real hustle and bustle kind of city. |

If my entire family were to get together in one place, we would look more like the United Nations than the United Nations does! So I am interested in all the places my family and in-laws live now or lived originally which takes in a lot of the places on the globe.
With Cable T.V. and Satellite dishes, it is as easy as flicking a switch to get news on just about anywhere and in any language. While I have no relatives in or from Pakistan, I often listen to the Canadian news channel that carries the Pakistani news just because it comes in right after a show I watch. I have found it quite interesting to see the news given from another point of view. The same is true with news on the Internet. I can and do get news from everywhere.
After WWII my parents took in a number of European refugees so my interest has had lots of fodder to keep it well fed over the years. Those early introductions to Europeans has, no doubt, had a lot to do with what has turned out to be a life long interest in Europe. It has had a lot to do with where I go when in Europe - to places the war vets in my own family fought and to places where our refugee guests came from or fought during the war. And as a Canadian, I have always been well received - sometimes literally with open arms - any where I have travelled over there.
I cannot speak for other Canadians but that is how this Canadian views Europeans - interesting and kind. I would love to go back.
I hope you do get to Canada. This is a great country. I have done it coast to coast by car many times and it is never ever boring. If you do come, plan to spend some time - more than a few weeks - it is a huge country and there is something special about everywhere you go here. |

I like Europeans. I work in the tourists district and constantly are in contact with Europeans. I find Europeans extremely polite and well mannered. I haven't met a rude one yet. I always wanted to visit Europe but I never have the chance. Europe has so many history and beautiful sites that interest me. It's also quite sad our media is overwhelmed with American information. The only European news I get is watching BBC. I'd say Canadians are interested in Europe but we just have a lot more access to the American media. |

Well, we do get European news, just not as much news we get from the USA.
Almost of my family were born in Europe too, so I would really like to go there someday soon. It's such a beautiful place with so much history! And so many interesting and kind people! :D |

been there done that

I live in Ontario and have a keen interest in European countries. Our news covers more from USA because they sre right next to us. We do get a lot of news from Europe and watch lots of sports from there also. My only grievance about Europe is that France should mind its own damned business about Quebec. Hope you get to Canada some day. |

I'm Canadian and we respect and like Europe very much, way more than the US, I want to travel to Europe so bad, our news is mostly from US and Canada but we do have CBC news bureaus around the world and we get BBC and alot of other European language stations at certain times...I think u would really like Canada, it's not like the US at all, Canadians are very nice and welcoming people. americans are rude and unfriendly especially to foreigners |

I'm French Canadian living in Québec and we kept most our European way of thinking to this day. Our educational system, health system, social services and more are based on west European systems. We're more liberal then English Canadians and the US once again because of our French Heritage. We watch TV5 and I personally watch a lot of BBC, love that British humour!
This doesn't mean we don't have a little American side. We consume an important amount of American TV, music and way of doing.
Canada is so wide and so different from one coast to the other. The East and West coasts are breath taking beautiful. Montreal is a festival, culture, concert, restaurant center. Toronto is the business center of Canada. The prairies are wide, flat with yellow and purple fields as far as you can see. Alberta is in the middle of nowhere with absolutely nothing to see or do..lol (sorry but it's true).
Hope you get to visit one day! |

Canadians like Europeans more than they like Americans. Since the majority of Canadians are European descendents, we feel ties to the motherlands. Americans think that they are ONLY Americans, not Europeans. They simply have colours.
PS - If you don't get sucked in by Toronto and Ottawa, come to Calgary. We are building a new skyscraper that will be the third tallest structure in Canada (The Bow). |

It's not that we are interested in Americans it's just that we have no choice! Our own media tends to cover more news from the States than from our own country..but that's the media... a little star struck I think.
As far as Europeans go I would love to see more Russians,British,Dutch,Swede's etc...coming to Canada but with the Canadian Immigration Department made up of mostly East Indian,Pakistani, black South Africans and Muslims I am afraid you will have to go to the back of the line if you are anything other.
What you have to remember,in Canada you are nothing unless you are a visible minority.
Good Luck. |

White European Canadians... they love it. Because they are from that region. The minority Canadians, we all hate Europe except GB. |
