Some people do this unintentionally (lack of education) some do intentionally (whatever you want to call them) |

Ignorance, plain and simple. I'm not bothered by it though, those too ignorant can stay away and leave this amazing country to us. |

they're stereotypes, dumb stereotypes.
but dont be bothered with them, it's just because people are ignorant about Canada. |

Any question about snow houses on here is a fake question. Most questions that are really bizarre about Canada are fake. They are written by trolls who love to get people all worked up.
That's like people who write questions on the parenting section about hating kids. They are stupid and love being stupid. |

What we don't know about we tend to make up. People form impressions from what they hear, see or read about no matter whether it's correct or not.
Human beings are very good at filling in the blanks when it comes to basic knowledge; however, we are very very bad at filling in the blanks with the correct information. |

their is a stereotype for you adnyuk who thinks everyone in canada speaks and right french ! Majority of canada is anglophones.
IN america they learn leats about other ocuntries around them .Sadly its not just Canada.
So I guess their ignorance really is not their fault .
but yes lol ....I get when i travel to the USa I live in an igloos ( and that's coming form people who live just a few hours away from our border) they think we have permanent perma frost ( and don't realize it's four seasons )
I was also asked by a store clerk in florida if I am canadian how can I afford to travel as our moeny is not worth much ! I almost honestly gagged knowing that I make way more than he does and he is asking me this . |

I am a canadian now living in florida , generally speaking the average american knows nothing about canada except for "eh" and because of Jean Chretien they think we all speak french. |

In fairness we actually feed this. We like to posture about being this "northern" people and use arctic iconography even though most of us live in southern cities and have never seen a polar bear outside of a zoo. Or go into tourist gift shops and see what we put on t-shirts for people to buy. |

It's not just other countries that are ignorant about Canada - even Canadians themselves are ignorant about some parts of Canada. I grew up in a very northern, isolated town and people in other parts of the country thought we lived in igloos and didn't have electricity. |

Basically the average Canadian child knows more about the US, or used to, than the average US adult knows about Canada unless they either have family up here, live near the border, or make trips up here. This is the fault of the US school system which focuses more on the US and then Europe/Asia than on their neighbours to the north. That being said we Canadians also love to pull the wool over our American neighbours eyes. A friend of mine once had some youth in Los Angeles believing that we have 3 storey igloos in Vancouver (actually they are 6...lol). A lot of times these type of questions are posted by people just to see what type of reaction they will get as anyone with access to the internet can see what Canada is like.
Most people I have met down there know little about Canada however I have never met anyone who seriously thinks that all Canadians live in igloos. I once travelled on a plane with a group of Australian students travelling to the US and Canada. They were surprised to learn that where I am from (West Coast) is milder than the mid-western states. They thought it would be the other way around. But they did know that we have regular houses, sky scrapers, and so on in our cities and towns. |

It's the sense of humour in Canada. We can't resist the jokes about semi detached igloos and getting the sled dogs out of storage.
I really love the one of the suburban housewives chasing the polar bears away from the garbage cans. |

It's the same with every other country too. Canadians get the wrong idea about Americans all the time. I've heard Canadians complain about American drivers. My boyfriend lives in the States so I drive there to visit him (I'm Canadian) and I find that the Americans are much better drivers than Canadians. They at least move so you can merge onto the highway.
That's my own opinion though. I just know I find highway driving so much easier in the States as opposed to Canada where it's scary to merge on the 400 series highways in Toronto |
