How does Montreal treat American tourists who don't speak French?

It won't depend of you speaking only English but more of your attitude. Before when the US dollar was really high some Americans were coming in Montreal displaying their money and act like if Canadians were peasant. Ok not everybody was doing that but unfortunately it takes few people like that to give a reputation.

Now I suppose it has changed a bit for that generalization. So if you are polite then you often end up with a smile. It would help to learn some basic words in French, like hi (bonjour), please (s'il-vous-plait), thank you (merci) and goodbye is cool because you can only say “bye”. With your accent they will realize you speak English but you try to make an effort and will switch to English if they can (because NO not everybody speaks English in Quebec...). That trick applies everywhere in the world and it has been successful everywhere I've been.

But don’t worry in general you won't have any problem of communication because there is always someone who can speak English in Montreal. Besides you are not the first or last American speaking only English who has and will visit Montreal. Montreal is the second most visited city in Canada after Toronto after all.

Very well, don't worry. Almost all Montrealers are bilingual.

The same way they treat Canadians who don't speak French. They pretend not to understand to make you embarrass yourself soon enough trying to speak French even though 99% of the French Canadians can understand English just fine. Then they like to pull your chain when you leave by saying "Good Bye" in perfect English. They need to know English as Leno is not translated when they watch it.

The other half of the population in Montreal are either native English speakers anyway though a small number of then speak neither English or French.
