Haha what a great question!

We tend to use it when we ask a question and are looking for agreement from another person.

"Nice day eh?" - and the other person knows it's their cue to answer back 'yeah!'

you wouldn't use it in a sentence when it starts with a question word like 'are', 'where', 'who', 'what', 'when'

For example 'Are you up for pizza?' - you definitely would not use 'eh' at the end of that sentence!!! BUT you would use it like this "Going for pizza, eh?"

So, looking at this, you seem to use it when your making a statement, but looking for verification...

"You're learning Canadian, eh?" (but you wouldn't say "Are you learning Canadian..eh?" that is just wrong haha...

Wow!!! I can't believe Americans are trying to answer this question ......Usually it is used like hey, at the end of a sentence, as in..."That was some game last night, eh?" or "I got a new job, eh." Like you want the opinion of the person you are talking to, or some sort of reaction, or you can spin the stament into a question. We don't just run around using "eh" everywhere like a bunch of psychos, saying "Eh, what are you doing, eh. I like maple syrup and hockey eh," contrary to popular American belief. Eh is not a complicated mystery. There is also the classic Canadian "F*ckin' eh!" Which is kinda like an obnoxiuos "That's Right!!!" or confimation of a statement like--"Work Sucks"....F*ckin' eh.

It isn't used after most sentences, and it also depends on where in Canada you're from. I am originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, and we hardly us it there. In fact, I rarely ever hear it used. I live in the west now, and it's not that common here, either. It's pronounced 'hey', but without the 'h' sound.

Mostly at the end of a sentence. (and not every sentence by the way) I don't hear it very much though, it depends on where you are, and the dialect of the person talking.

Alaskan Beauty
It's more used in the eastern parts than in the western parts.

We don't use it at the end of every sentence. Here's an example as to how we do use it:

You might say: "Nice weather, isn't it?" we would say: "Nice weather, eh?"
