Born and raised in Edmonton, and still here. It's not as bad as it was a generation ago. Our winters are milder nowadays. Consequently, they're not as white as they used to be. (Sure, we did get snow here on Saturday, but it melted again by Sunday.) There are some winter days when it takes three times longer to get home during rush hour, but there really are not too many of those. (Keep the gas tank at least half full though. Just in case.)
I haven't needed to wear actual wear winter boots since I was a kid. I tend to go for weather proof shoes, Merrell's usually. A hat. You loose 75% of your heat from the top of your head you know. Mittens are warmer than gloves, but either will do. Think of dressing in layers. Then you can just peel them off as you warm up.
Make sure to check out Candy Cane Lane and Hawrelark Park at night time. See if the University of Alberta's choir is performing while you're here.
Need a break from our winter? Visit the Muttart Conservatory, or go to West Edmonton Mall's Waterpark. Get an expansive view of the city while having breakfast at the Hotel MacDonald.
Since you're here, be sure to visit The Rockies. These mountains are 7 hours away.
Make snowmen. Go ice-skating. Tobogganing. Snow-shoeing. Horse rides. Have a snowball fight. Enjoy the blue skies.
Explore our River Valley. It's the longest in Canada, and growing.
Have fun!! |

If not used to the snow, then don't come, or unless you bring a change of underwear! LOL
Lots of snow, and cold bad weather.
Edmonton has one huge mall called," West Edmonton mall.
Check it out:

Go to British Columbia, around Vancouver Canada. Sometimes more rain then snow, but the mountains have snow all around, good skiing. |

Great idea..quite easy to get around. dark, cold and white, the mountains are close enough for day trips. I would love to take my kids to Austrailia..for a non-white Christmas for a change.. |

It really depends on how much snow there is and how cold it is. If there is a fresh dump of snow it's hard to get around because it takes a while for the plows to get everywhere and if it is REALLY cold the roads can get pretty slippery. Still, everyone there is pretty used to it, so on those types of days things just go a little slower than usual is all. You would still be able to take the bus or a cab or drive a rental car around - just plan to take a little longer! |
