I love where i live in British Columbia. Really, the biggest factors in where you want to go are what you want to do for work and what you want to do for play. BC is an outdoor playground with world class skiing/snowboarding in winter, water sports (ocean, river or lake) in the summer, and hiking & climbing & riding year round depending on how adventurous you want to be. If you want cultural stuff, look either toward Vancouver or Victoria (in BC) or consider going east to Toronto or Montreal. If you cannot speak french, consider avoiding Quebec. The north country (e.g. Yukon or NW Territories or Nunavut) is wilder, colder, and ideal if you want to experience wild landscapes and Native culture. The prairies are beautiful in a flat windswept way, with wide open skies and farming every where. The east coast of canada is beautiful... lots of history and some outdoors activities.
As far as what you want to do for work, make sure you get the proper work visas and spend a bit of time looking at jobs before you come over. The easiest jobs to find are either in skilled work (have either a university/college diploma/degree or a trades certification) or in entry-level work (food service, hospitality, tourism, retail). Be prepared for some employers to be reluctant to hire you depending on how well you speak english (or french, if you're going to Quebec). |

You can't just waltz into Canada and live here for a year. You would need to find a way to support yourself and, to do that, you would need a work visa. |

Are you planning to work in Canada? Then you will need a visa:http://www.cic.gc.ca/ Better apply well in advance, it will take a while.
BTW, if you don't like the Canadian sense of humor, you may not like living there. |

Unfortunately, what .Z says is true for most countries. I used to want to do the same thing. Nice pipe dream, but not terribly likely. |

Canada is a HUGE country, with tons of different things to offer. I cannot give you a "best place" to live/visit as whats best for me, will not be best for you, and there are many deciding factors. Perhaps if you give some general information about yourself, I can give you a better answer. |

Winters are long and cold. Trust me I've been living here for over 33 years, but I wouldn't want to leave because we have such a great way of life.
Stick to the major cities: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec. They are all like different countries because they are so far away from each other. People and landscapes are really different. More chances of employment also.
I knew an Australian guy who did what you are talking about. He earned his way doing landscaping and odd jobs.
Good luck! |

Canada is so big it would be hard to recommend one city. It depends on what you like. If you like city living then Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver might be good. Alberta in general always is looking for more workers, depending on your field. If you like outdoors-hiking, fishing, etc. again Calgary and area has Banff close and Kananaskis for camping (you can tell I like Calgary) and near Vancouver there is great hiking at Grouse and further away is Whistler for skiing etc.
As long as you research the countries you want to go to I thknk you'll have a great time :) |
