I have a relative dating someone from Canada and would like to know how Canadians are different from Americans. Sometimes they seem so similar, but I could be wrong. |

Canada: Smoked Meat, Mae West.
USA: Pastrami, Twinkies.
Canada: Hour has 22 minutes.
USA: Hour has 60 minutes.
Canada: When going to Hollywood, pretend you are American.
USA: When going anywhere else on the planet, pretend you are Canadian.
Canada: Separatists
USA: 2 governors who starred in "Predator"
Canada: Je me souviens.
USA: The South will rise again.
Canada: Has a lovely Regina.
USA: Plenty of Intercourse, Pennsylvania.
Canada: The conservatives are called "PC". Liberals run the country.
USA: Opposite.
Canada: Celine Dion.
USA: Barbra Streisand.
And for Americans, here is how to understand Canada:
British Columbia = California + Oregon
Alberta = Texas + Wyoming
Saskatchewan = North North Dakota
Manitoba = Minnesota + Iowa
Ontario = New York + Michigan
Quebec = New York + France
New Brunswick = Maine without the overcrowding
Nova Scotia = Massachusetts without the overcrowding
Prince Edward Island = Delaware
Newfoundland = Maine + Iceland |

wow, look at these americans comparing to us canadians.
We are very very different. Hate to beat it, but were closer to britain than we are to america.
Our medical care is better, a maniac isnt driving our country, and we dont vote for a manic many times, we help the united nations etc... Hell, we created the united nations, america never paid united nations. Proud to be canadian, but please dont compare us similar. We clean up after united states crap in the middle east.
We are a peaceful, and free country. America can never be as free as us. We people are much nicer compared to some americas. |

Since Canada IS in North America, and actually occupies far more of it, it might be better to ask how Canada is different from the USA.
We mind our own business and don't have terrorists aiming at us. |

Canadians are often more polite and have a calmer demeanour and always a willingness to help |

They are very similiar actually. But a Canadian would never admit that... It really depends on what part of Canada we are talking about here. For example, in Montreal, it is very much like a smaller version of Paris. There are actually some people there that do not speak English at all. My job involves calling and receiving calls there and I have always thought that they are very friendly and easy going. |

I understand that you are talking about the differences between US citizens and Canadians. Some have already been mentioned and there are too many to possibly think of here but some are:
Canada: quiety patriotic USA: loudly patriotic
Canada: a mosaic of cultures where differences are celebrated USA: a melting pot whre other cultures are expected to blend in
Canada: left leaning politically USA: right leaning politically
Canada: mainly peacekeepers but will send troops for causes we believe in such as Afghanistan, Korea, WW1 and 2 USA: mainly aggressive
Canada: polite USA: pushy
Canada: secure USA: a bit paranoid since 9/11
Of course I am somewhat biased being Canadian and those were generalizations. I'm sure that the two of them can work things out if they want to. There are also many similarities in lifestyle, standard of living, etc. The two countries have the same television shows. Both have wide open spaces unlike most places in Europe. Both have grown up with the same conveniences.
One thing that I think you will find is that Canadians will be more informed about the USA and the world in general than the other way around.
Anyway, best wishes to them. The differences in culture will be more subtle for the most part but they will be there. Look at it as an opportunity to grow and expand your knowledge.
And ............. make sure they bring Canadian beer! If you want to impress the Canadian, learn how to make a Bloody Caesar (or just Caesar as we usually call it). |

Um now i might be a little biased here being Canadian myself but the main things ive noticed since ive travelld to the U.S 1. Our accents i guess if we keep our mouths shut we'd look american but its like the second we say one word even hi they know were not from there. so i dont get why people keep saying we sound alike cuz we dont dependining on were in the U.S u travel 2. n the Second would be our politics n just how we act towards the rest of the world. We go where we are wanted n needed mostly as Peace Keepers. (excluding the war in Afghanistan) So that means we r first Asked b4 we go some where we just dont Go. ( Im sure anyone can tell this is probably not that thinlly a veiled swipe at the Bush Government) I have nothing againtst the majority of Americans just the ones that voted 4 Bush but thats a whole nother thing:) so the way we talk n our standing in the world. P.S i would say that were polite people n alot of us say r please n thank u's almost religiously but thats already been said:) |

Well they could have similar qualities since we're right next to them but Canadians have a more softer personality and their english has sort of a european accent since they're influenced by the french. |

There's many similarities and many people probably couldn't tell the difference if you stuck a bunch of Canadians and Americans in a room together....until some of them maybe spoke and you heard their accents.
Our cultures are very similar...with music, fashion and our daily lives. Many Canadians sense of humor is similar to British people and it's evident in our tv and movies. Americans I find really like to show of their patriotism where as Canadians are more laid back about it but we still party it up on Canada Day.
There really isn't many differences between us other then our governments. |

canada copies everything AMERICA does, in respect to entertainment, and foreign policy.....
canada claims to have "free" health care which couldn't be further than the truth....the y have astronomical taxes, their doctors are sub par and the waiting times horrendous.....
the canadian people are not very nice nor polite, this is due to the fact that they know AMERICA is a better country than canada....canada is filled with crime, poverty and drugs....it is a very unsafe place to live....canada's world image is also in shambles...the world finds canada to be the annoying little brother that no one likes...why do you think so many canadians sew AMERICAN flags to their backpacks when they travel abroad? |

They aren't.Well the only diffrence is they have small heads,they say EH! alot,good beer and they get used to the cold. |
