How is it like to live in Montreal for English speakers? |
I'm thinking about moving to Montreal, but I don't speak French.
I used to study arts, so it might be great for me to get there.
I am worried about people, jobs, weather,etc... |

Montreal is fairly bilingual, and its probably not a bad idea to just learn a bit of the basics in french. The weather is similar to that of Toronto; near water, same winds and snow. But Montreal is a little colder, geographically. |

there are just as many english people as there are french
it gets cold in the winter but the weather is still amazing
and there's so much culture in this city its not even funny,
if you're looking for a job in something in fine arts or anything like that i'm sure you'll absolutely love it here. |

Weather is cold in the winter Montreal is at the confluence of the Seaway and Ottawa valleys, any crappy weather in either valley hits Montreal. In the summer it gets hot and sticky just like most of Ontario & Quebec you can expect temperatures to go from about 35 C in the summer to -35 C in the winter.
The people are the same in every big city they think that they are the greatest and that there city is the best. Many people will tell you that Montreal has a European flavour about it but it doesn't Quebec City has much more and it feels that way.
In the arts you had best learn to speak French there are some highly technical jobs that are only in English but most positions are French.
I've always found it a place hard to get around in without a car once you leave the metro routes. Taxes are high.
In the arts your best bets might be Toronto or Vancouver but they are expensive too.
Good luck where ever you decide to go. |

According to the 2006 Census:
Percentage of population by mother tongue, Montreal Island, 2006
French: 49.3%
English: 16.3%
Other: 33.5%
That's for the whole Island. There is much more English spoken on the Western end of the Island and many people who speak one language at home are bilingual on the street.
You will be able to manage with only English but it will be hard to find a well paying job in any field. The people are great and any attempt to speak French will be appreciated.
The weather is usually frigid in winter and hot and humid in summer. |

When getting a job you need french. English and any additional language is a plus because there are many immigrants who are allophones(Don't know english nor french). Weather is pretty much the same as other major Canadian Cites. I live in the Laval area which is north of montreal and snow removal is actually quite good compared to montreal, which i think is a little of a mess. My first language is English but I also know french, not all store clerks speak english, or they just hate it so much they don't want too. |

Its going to be fun for you if you just come to school here..because everyone at that school will be English. It is not so "fun" to find a job here though if you dont speak french.
Weather is the pits... minus 15 cellsius right now and about 1 or 2 feet of snow on the ground...it will go by maybe April if we're lucky. |
