A passport is valid for 10 years. However many countries require you to have at least 3 months validity left before you can enter their country .. so figure about 9 1/2 years.
You do need a passport if you are arriving into Canada via an airplane or ship.
You can drive into Canada without one until the end of this year ( just need birth certificate )

American passports are good for 10 years while Canadian passports are good for 5 years. You really need a passport to go anywhere nowadays except for Puerto Rico (if you are an American citizen). It is just better to have one just in case.

I am not sure how long they are good for but I do know that now you DO need a passport to travel to Canada, this just came about recently. But if you drive then you are ok.

Passports are good for 10 years, and I believe that they were going to start requiring one into Canada, but wasn't sure if they ever decided on a date.
