S'ok Alpine Alli , I'll rate you up. You ARE far closer. If you don't discount size and just refer to the term lake, there are over 250,000. There are 3,899 lakes of 3 sq Km and over included in this number.

100,000

Ontario is known as the land of 10,000 lakes. And that's pretty close to the actual count.

Kelly + Eternal Universal Energy
There are approximately 250,000 lakes and over 100,000 kilometres (62,000 mi) of rivers in the province.

<<<Ontario's quarter million lakes and countless rivers and streams hold about one-third of the world's fresh water. The rivers of southern Ontario flow into the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River system. Most northern Ontario rivers flow into James Bay and Hudson Bay.<<<INCORRECT INFORMATION.

EDIT>>>CORRECTION!
My source was flawed. I went on the Atlas of Canada Government site and I now stand corrected... I think my information which I got from another website, misinterpreted the real information "one third of the great lakes are inside Canada" and "Of particular note are the Great Lakes. This set of lakes, which is shared with the United States, makes up the largest surface area of freshwater found in one place anywhere in the world." SO this was misinterpreted and written wrong it should have said.. "one third of the largest surface area of freshwater in the world is in Ontario"

I think that is where the confusion comes in. As far as I can determine from Canadas website..... "Approximately 40% of Canada's landmass and freshwater is north of 60 degrees North latitude. Between them, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut contains 9.2% of the world's total freshwater." and "Overall, Canada may be considered a freshwater-rich country: on an average annual basis, Canadian rivers discharge close to 9% of the world's renewable water supply, while Canada has less than 1% of the world's population. Water is also highly visible in Canada: probably no country in the world has as much of its surface area covered by freshwater as does Canada." All this information can be viewed at the Atlas of Canada website here...
http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/freshwater/distribution

Keep in mind.......

Canada has a huge number of lakes (the exact total number is unknown).
