How much French is in Ottawa? |
If I were to live in Ottawa, how much French is present there? I know it's officially bilingual and that all the signs are in both languages, but how much can you do in French (shopping, restaurants, randomly talking to people in French instead of in English)?
Thanks. |

Depending on where you are in the city there can be very much of it or very less of it. In some neighborhoods like The Gleebe, there is practically no french spoken, but in others like Sandy Hill and Vanier there are mostly french speaking residents. But if you go around town and don't know english all that well you could find your way and find a couple of french speakers here and there. It's actually pretty present. I wouldn't say everywhere you go is billingual but some respect it more then others. In downtown you can surely find someone that speaks french easily in some other neighborhoods it can be a while before you find some.
I am billingual and speak mostly english to get some services like restaurant and stores, because even if they do speak french they will speak to you in english and you will too, so unless they or you have an accent you'll end up speaking english. |

Well, because it's right across the river from Hull, Quebec, you hear a lot of French being spoken. A lot of people there are bilingual, as well as all the services you would need are bilingual too. Whether French or English, it's easy to navigate around the city. |

A lot ! A good source for this question is schools. Most of the schools are english, some are bilingual but their is this very french school called Lycée Claudel on Riverside dr. It's only french and their is over 500 kids there ! |

I found that most store clerks/waitresses were ready to speak either language. Most were very fluent at both. I was quite impressed. |

Almost 40% of the population of Ottawa speaks French and most of them also speak English. Being close to Quebec (about one minute over the bridge) there are also a lot of French speaking visitors. |

A lot of French there. My sister attended the University of Ottawa, and they claimed that 30% of their students were French-first speakers. She says more like 75%. Since Quebec is right across the river, i'd say that you can do a lot in French. |

No too much, English is the main language here but there are French people too. Like when you go shopping they will always talk to you in English. |
