really depends on what needs to be done. Ask the ortho place that did up the estimate how they calculate their fees. Dentists usually base their prices on a pricing code that comes out once a year.. a good dentist does not charge MORE than the fee codes short of rounding up to the nearest dollar. Dentists who are specialists have a different fee code book than generalists and therefore can charge more for the same proceedure. The fee codes are then in turn used by the insurance companies as a guideline to how much they are willing to pay towards work done. It is possible that you can get a few things done by a generalist but at the same time there is a reason they get paid more. Possible to save money with going to a regular hygenist for cleaning rather than using the specialist's person. Mouths can really differ in what needs to be done to them to look 'good'. The price in the general area of being normal.. A lot of ortho places will arrange payment plans.. they usually even have an employee whose job it is to work that kind of stuff out. Also get them to do a 'pre-determination' for your insurance company if you have one and then you can get them to commit to what they are willing to pay for.

Depends entirely on where you live, who your dentist is, what your dental plan covers and how great the correction is. It's really something that you have to get estimates on, based on your own particular needs.

I live in Saskatchewan and I paid $5000 last winter to have braces put on my son's teeth, that did not include the office visit to do the imprints $240 or the initial visit $80 for them to say yes they will accept him as a patient so no $6000 is not too much to pay.

The $5000 fee includes the appliances on his teeth and his monthly checkup and adjustments as well as to repair any damage to the wires or the actual brace itself.

I paid $3500 each with both kids and that was 15 years ago so could easily believe $6K now and yes it depends on what needs to be done. If they need to move the jaw using major headgear it cost alot and then the braces themselves, the attaching, the chnaging of the wires, the adjustments and then the retainers afterwards. Its a years long process alright and depending on their age keeping on them about maintenance (A MUST) is also a nice additional chore as parent (not!).. My advise, before you invest $6 Gs just get a second opinion. They have new therapies for moving teeth if conditions are more mild called "Invisiline"///which are like retainers but progressively changed over time to make teeth align. those seem much easier to "enforce" and maybe cheaper I dont know... tend to doubt tho... they get you. Just to be sure that you havent hit on a dentist in need of a vacation just get a second.

If your kid was really misaligned teeth it works . Both kids now 25 and 23 and one took really good care during/afterwards the process and got great results the other was younger and far less compliant and today has average smile but braces for him... I dont know if it worth the entire process for mediocre improvement...
