How much does it cost to drive across Canada?

I am planning a trip from Victoria, BC to St. John's, NL in the summer of this year. I should be driving a 2007 compact car or sedan with just myself and a couple suitcases on board, so not too much weight. Curious how much it would cost in gas to drive approximately, and how long it would take if Im driving alone about 8 hours per day.
Additional Details
LOL, the reponses to this are hilarious. I know it's far. I have driven from Edmonton to St. John's before as a passenger. I want to do this as my own personal goal and for my own reasons. I am assuming it will be about 800 minimum in gas each way. I will drive one way alone and have a family member who has done it about 10 times help on the way back. You can't fear things like this just because they seem big. You will never get anything done if you look at life in that way. I don't really have a choice when I live as far from my hometown as I can get in Canada. Driving sounds like a worthwhile adventure.

It sounds like a great trip and something I want to do myself someday. I have done many long road trips, often on my own. The last one was from St. John's, NL to Key West in Florida. It was fun.

Well, let's see .. it is almost 5000 km, so at only 8 hours a day I think you need to count on at least 11 or 12 days. You know that the ferry crossing to Newfoundland will be about 8 hours if you cross to Port aux Basques, and then there will be 10 to 12 hours of driving in Newfoundland. So if you allow yourself two weeks, you should have enough time. As you know if you have done this before, the trick is to find opportune places to stop for your driving plans. I think your estimate for gas would be about right - $800 - $1000. Then I expect you will want to allow for hotels each night you are on the road, so count on another $100 per night for your accommodations, though you may be able to find B & B's cheaper than that, and even motels cheaper than that.

Have fun. It will be a great trip. I don't know why anyone would try to discourage you. If this is something you want to do, go for it. Maybe I'll be doing it at the same time you are, in the opposite direction. Best of luck.

Driving only 8 hours a day, it will take you at least 13 days, you are talking about travelling almost 5,000 miles and the most you will make driving 8 hours is around 400 miles, averaging 50mph. As far as costs, you are looking at tankfulls of gas, if you know how far a tank takes you, divide it by how far it is but realistically , you are looking at between 600.00 and 1,000.00 if you get great gas mileage, half again if not.And you still have to get back home.

It's about 4500km and the cost would be like $700 to $1000

As exciting as this may sound... it's not. Canada is a beautiful country and all but it is also huge. So you may say "WOW LOOK AT THE PRARIES!" four hours later you'll say "Wow, I swore I saw that same field/tractor two hours ago..." then you'll have like ten more hours to go. Price wise, I have no idea. Gas is expensive in the summer so it's not cheap.

Do your research and find lots of interesting places to stop in between. Or make sure to bring along some friends and lots and lots of music to pass the time. In a way, I'm kind of jealous that you'll get to see so much of this country, coast to coast.

Gas today is at $1.01 a litre in Ottawa but it varries. It depends on what milage to the gallon (kilometers to the litre) you get with your car but as been noted it is over 4500 miles from coast to coast.

Its not cheap.. Gasoline is expensive.... but then who cares?
Do you really want to go alone? No rider or companion?
To share the costs? How about one way or part way?
It is nice to be able to talk to someone... That is a long drive.

Oh my God, are you crazy! I don't mean any disrespect but do you have ANY idea what that will be like? Bet you give up by the time you're halfway through Saskatchewan.
