How much will my US money be worth in Canada? |
My girlfriend and I will be going on a 4 day trip to Montreal. I know Canadian dollars used to be worth less than US dollars, but now they are worth slightly more. I know things in Canada cost a larger dollar amount due to the discrepancy in value, but now it has caught up. Will my US money be worth anything, or do the prices reflect the change in value? |

American money is pretty much at par to Canadian dollars right now. The American dollar will be accepted at par in most restaurants and bars, but some stores may ask you to use the local ATM if you want to buy anything, as the bank will charge them for exchanging the funds.
As for what some others have said to you, please note that tipping is welcomed by most waitresses, taxi drivers, and room service attendants. The normal tip is the same as in the USA, namely:
> no tip for lousy service
> 10% for average service
> 15% for good service
> 20% for great service
And in Quebec, if you see "TPS" on your bill, it does not stand for "tips" but rather for "Taux Produits & Services" (French version of Goods & Services Tax).
As for your using US money in Canada, when I go to any American city, I never expect them to accept Canadian funds from me, so you should not be insulted if someone does not accept US funds while you are in Canada. Most bank ATMs can be used with your debit card (part of the CIRRUS and PLUS network), and American credit cards (VISA, Mastercard) are accepted in Canada. Your credit card company simply does the US dollar conversion at a designated exchange rate for the date that the transaction gets processed.
One thing you may find is that buying some items in Canada are more expensive than in USA. For example, most books, calendars, etc have a higher price in Canada than in USA. And when I was in Boston in September, the cost of music CDs and movie DVDs were much less down there than they were here. Just watch what you buy and where you buy it. Big name stores in malls will generally be cheaper than small boutiques in the tourist areas. |

1.00 USD = 0.998598 CAD, your money will be worth the same as it is in the US. Think of all the price tags you see as if they were in US dollars. |

The CAD is a fraction more than the USD. You'll be pleased to know that some things in Montreal are MUCH cheaper than here in Ontario. They have some really nice places to visit and the people are friendly...although some ignorant Canadians would say different. The night life is Great also! Have a great trip!
I am Pro Canadian and pleased to see that Americans want to come and visit Canada...Some of us are a little bitter over the fact that SOME Americans treat us like second class, but I know many Americans who love Canada and Canadians. Try not try to take it too personal what some say.
Also the guy who says Canadians only expect a 10-15% tip...you're just a cheap ***! You're obviously a tight ***! |

You can use your US money, but they will charge you A LOT extra. They used to appreciate our money ... more money for them. But now that they're dollar is worth more, they over charge Americans and they expect us to change our money into Canadian. Some stores won't even take US money now. I bet they loved US money when it was worth more. |

In general everything in Canada is more expensive. The only thing going for you is that you can tip substantially less. Canadians only expect a 5-10% tip compared to 15-20% in the US. |
