its definitely not impossible...how is it that they are seen in vermont and maine USA but montreal is not north enough?? i've seen them twice in my life, once in my parents backyard in upstate ny and the second right in buffalo, ny of all places...if the solar storm causing the NL is strong enough they can be seen very far south even through some city lights...that particular storm caused the aurora to be seen in western ny for about 3 nights straight...
..often peoploe see Light Pillars and confuse them for aurora, i think that may be what i saw in my parents backyard but they're are amazing nonetheless..

I have never seen them.
I think you have to drive 1. a little further north, and 2. away from city lights for maximum enjoyment. |

never we are not north enough but you can experience it in northern quebec |

You can see them in Calgary which is six degrees further North than Montreal. They are too faint to see anywhere but at the outskirts of the city. It's a pretty rare occurance.
The would be even fainter in Montreal and I doubt there is anywhere dark enough to see them if they were out. |

It isn't common to see the aurora this far south, but anyone who says it is "impossible" is going out on a limb. I've seen the aurora borealis on occasion at locations in Ontario farther south than Montreal! The trick is to be out in open country, far from city lights, otherwise the aurora is difficult or impossible to see at all. So you would have to be prepared to drive some distance out from Montreal. The good news is that scientists can predict heavy auroral activity by studying the sun, and there are often news stories to indicate when auroras can be expected to occur. |

I've seen them only once, oddly enough they were bright enough to be seen on the west island.
This was in...1999? |
