How realistic would it be for a southern Californian with two kids to relocate to Canada? Would we be happy?

it would be realistic for you --- if you moved to the southern part of British Columbia (they get little or no snow but more rain in the winter time) or southern Alberta, (they get very little snow -as they get the chinook winds from the west- and the snow is gone just about the same day they get it or the next day)...Canada is a beautiful country... the further east you go after Manitoba the more expensive it gets to live.. and more of a hectic life...
The school systems are great.... education is of high standards... health care is cheap enough.... in Alberta for a family you pay only $50.00 a month (I think- it just comes off my cheque). Manitoba you do not pay anything for health care... the govt there just gives you a health card, and you can go to any doctor anytime..
the lakes, beaches, mountains are nice.
do some research and you will see it is not only a nice place to visit but a nice place to live....

Yes, I think you will be happy. I have visited Victoria on Vancouver Island, what a beautiful place...just like a European City, lots of flowers, outdoor cafes, many possibilities!

It quite possible, as long as you apply for a residency visa. Check out:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.html

We live in coastal British Columbia, so we don't have to contend with 'proper' winters found in Ontario etc. Coastal BC (areas include Vancouver Island & the Sunshine Coast) offer a peaceful, relaxed lifestyle. If you wanted somewhere more urban, anywhere in the lower BC mainland offers city living, and therefore more employment opportunities.

I don't have children, but we are increasingly seeing families moving to our area to give them a more free childhood. Kids here enjoy a lot more unsupervised exploring (bike rides, trips to the lake) than in other places. Kids regularly hitch-hike in our town - I would have been horrified if I'd seen that in the UK!

Anyway, it's worth considering. Canada is a very varied country; you'll find some areas that are very similar to the US such as major urban centres, and places that are nothing like it. But it's all worth checking out if you wish to experience a different lifestyle. That's what we've done.

Yes ! You will be very happy! And ...they have free health care! And low cost prescriptions. You will love it! You might even find an American deserter there and fall in love.

?
IT DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH YOU LIKE THE COLD WEATHER. AND SNOW AND ICE.

Da Ben Dan
You might find that you like it very much..here in Vancouver there is rarely (maybe once a year) snow and ice...guns are illegal...health care is taken care of..and we have the same relaxed attitude that much of the west coast does...Vancouver is a beautiful city....I think you'd be happy...but come visit and see for yourself.

The summers are terrific in Edmonton and the job market is fantastic. The evening hours take some getting used to in the summer as it is daylight and looks about 6:30pm until about 12:00 or longer (I didn't stay up to see). If you are happy in so cal you probably will be bored in Canada. If you are tired of the rat race you will love it. Nice people, at least all of the ones that I met in my week there.

It depends on why you are moving and what you are looking for.
My bet is that your kids will receive a better education there, no matter what grade they are in.
It will be ashock to your system the first winter you go through though. I think Victoria, BC tends to have a "mild" winter, as far as Canada goes.
Canada is a great place to live, as long as you are ready to give up your right to own a gun.

St N
Pretty well covered already. If you want warm winters, stay in the southern BC coastal area. For mild winters (temperatures either side of freezing and snow about half the time or less) try southern Ontario. The rest of Canada has true winter with minor variations. You'll probably want to avoid the Toronto area now as it is becoming to Americanized with gang warfare in the streets and drive by shootings. We should have blocked American television from the beginning then we wouldn't have smuggled in the guns to looked macho.
