How safe is rural Canada? |
I apologise for being extremely ignorant, but I am thinking of moving to Canada, in particular Yukon or rural British Columbia, and I was wondering in general about how safe these places are perceived to be. I'm a girl and I'd be living on my own, and because I come from a country with basically no guns, I'm kind of paranoid through lack of experience! Again, forgive me for sounding like an idiot; Canada looks and sounds amazing and that's why I want to move there, but I'm curious as to how safe its more remote locations are? |

I live by myself in a rural area in BC, have done a lot of camping and travelling through BC on my own and I'd say it's safe. I have a dog, maybe that helps, but I can't think of anything that made me feel unsafe. I think it's more a matter of picking the right people to hang out with and taking basic precautions like you do everywhere. Guns barely come into it. Very few Canadians have guns unless they hunt or are spending time in areas where an encounter with dangerous wildlife is possible. Last time I saw a gun of any kind was about 1987. |

Rural Canada is very safe. |

I Saw Everything

I use to live in Alberta Canada. I have traveled everywhere though. Canada, in many areas are very safe. In fact it was an everyday occurrence when someone would run into the nearest convenience store and leave their car running. Then they would grab their coffee, cigarettes and news paper and get back into their car and take off to work. You really don't have anything to worry about. I think the big cities like Toronto are the ones you will see a difference in but most other areas are quite nice and no violence that I saw. |

Well. I live in a rural area outside a city of 50,000. The only crime we get, is petty crime, like thefts, and almost every case involves people who know each other. As for guns, no worries there either. Canada has strict gun laws, and not many people are authorized to carry a handgun. Of course hunters use rifles, shotguns and the like, but then again, you aren't a deer or moose, are you? |

Canada is very safe particular in rural areas. Crime is lower and short of having a gun if you are out in the wilderness, you would need one for grizzly bears or cougars.
The Yukon is extremely rural outside of Whitehorse and is very cold during the winter. Again, safety here is all about ensuring you are warm and don't get caught outside during the winter without proper warm gear as you can freeze to death. You have to know what you are doing!
Are you talking about safe from Crime??????? If that is what you are referring to, the rural area is safer than anywhere else. |

i can't say much for yukon. but the remote areas of british columbia are nice. vancouver has lots of people from hong kong and kicked back west coasters (free spirit - hippy like).. there is a drug scene, in vancouver there is a big heroin problem, there is a bit of a coke problem as well, but moreso in alberta. fort mcmurray where there is a lot of development in alberta is pretty old west rough and tumble from what i heard. but besides those mentioned, it is a pretty civil land and the community is much stronger out west in the rural areas than in the city. all cities become pretty faceless. but visiting the towns was one of my better experiences, lots of positive minded people and close knit communities. |

Canada is very safe. However, rural BC and the Yukon is extremely remote and difficult. You didn't say where you are from, but life where the temperature is -40 for months at a time is not easy. It would be a bit naive for a 19 year old to be on their own in the Yukon or Ft St John. Get a degree first. |
