unless of course you are referring to the Montreal Canadiens. Then the border is 2millimetres. |

The border is just a line that signifies the separation between our countries. I have not see a thickness designated in any website such as the Canada Border Services Agency, or US Border Protection.
In 1925, the International Boundary Commission was made a permanent organization responsible for surveying and mapping the US-Canada boundary, maintaining boundary markers, as well as keeping the boundary clear of brush and vegetation.
This clearing of the vegetation extends for 3 metres (10 ft) on each side of the "line". That is why some people may suggest that the border is as wide as 6 metres (20ft), but that clearing of the space was just to make it easier to mark the exact border locations.
How thick are you? Are you thinking that you may be able to straddle the border and have dual nationality if it was not too wide? Standing sideways, that could mean that your logical side was in Canada and your creative side was in USA. Just don't stand facing facing north or south, because you might be breathing in one country and defecating on the other! |

When I lived in St. Stephen NB there was a bridge to get over to the US. I wasn;t a very big river at that point, and in the middle of the bridge was a plaque with two sides. One said, you are in the United States of America, the other said You are in Canada.
So, to answer your question, it is a one-dimensional line, with length but no thickness. |

I have to agree with chuckles951. The border cannot have any thickness over and above that which is needed to provide an imaginary line between the two countries/states/provinces. If it was 1 meter as was suggested by someone else then conceivably someone could stand on that 1 meter space and commit any crime they wanted to without retribution.
Traditionally, the borders between countries have been a thin imaginary line to mark the divide between the sovereign states. Countries usually agree on a "buffer zone" or an area of stand off on either side of a border to limit development and other land uses so that they don't encroach on the other country either directly or through oversight/surveillance. |

A border has no actual thickness. It is an artificial divide. You are either on one side of it or the other. There is no point where you are in neither country. |

the border is a divide line between USA and Canada and unfortunately that divide line is in the middle of the Detroit River so for people to cross the border, you go threw the tunnel under the water and when you come to the canadian flag and the american flag you are at the divide line or if you cross the divide line by bridge, again you will see the american flag and the canadian flag and that is the divide line. The american customs questions you on the american side and the canadian customs questions you on the canadian side and sometimes you could wait 4 hours to cross the border and the cost is $10.00 return trip. Both sets of Customs Officers carry weapons and starting in a month you need a passport to cross from one country to the other. It is not an easy process. The river that divides the two countries is 1 mile wide. |
