How to get thru winter seasons in canada?

Hello, we're migrating soon to Toronto, Canada on the 15th of Nov. We came from a tropical country. Don't have any idea on how to live life in Canada, and what more if it's winter season?

1st: What to wear to keep your body warm during the season?

2nd: What to put on your skin to keep it from being cracked up? People say that there are times that ears and nose falls off like a brittle glass.

3rd: Is it true that we have to buy rubbershoes with 3 inches of heels just to KEEP-YOUR-FEET-OFF-THE-ICE?

1) Ski jackets, down filled - cozy!, tons of warm man made things for coats and jackets. Ski doo suits if you are staying out all day or skidooing,

2) Do not believe all that you hear. I know of people who have frozen body parts but they have usually been out in it for hours or were dumb enough not to wear winter clothing. In most of the country, you will know if you ears are freezing - they hurt like hell giving you time to get out of it. Of the southern parts where most of us live, Alberta is one of the few places where you can - occasionally - freeze your ears or nose and not be aware it is freezing and that is because it is so dry there, Unless 40 below is accompanied by the wind and it usually is, you will not get the pain to warm you. Lived there for several decades and came back east with all my body parts still attached.

3) Again - a bit of an exaggeration. I have not owned boots since the 70's. They are a bother. Sneakers are just as warm unless you are out plowing through it in the wilds - then you need boots. 3' heels would have a lot of people doing swan dives into the street, especially if there was black ice about. Not clever but some kids do wear such stuff - a fashion statement. Ha! wait until they get to my age. Their fashion statement will come back and bite them!

I know you didn't ask but it is a fact that the weather south of the border is often much worse than it is up here. Watch the weather reports out of New York and Chicago - they are always grinding to a halt during the winter for storms or maybe Canada just has better snow removal crews.

1. You can buy warm clothes in any store. I like to layer up so I can layer down if it's warmer for a day. To do that, you might wear a big windproof jacket, underneath a fleece, under that maybe a sweater, under that a t-shirt. If it's a little warmer, you can skip the fleece or the sweater. For pants, if it's too cold, I will wear sports warmup pants over my jeans, that way if I go indoors like to the mall, I can take them off while I am inside. You could also wear long underwear but of course you can't take that off in the mall. You need a toque and gloves or mittens. If it's very cold, you can drape a scarf over your face too.

2. Moisturizer or body lotion. I like Nivea milk in the blue bottles because it's thick enough to protect your skin but not greasy. I lived in Toronto one winter and then moved to Alberta where it's even colder. I still have my ears and nose instact. I have never met anybody here without ears and nose.

3. And how would rubber shoes with 3" heels keep your feet off the ice? The sole of the shoe will always touch the ice if there is ice at all. You might need warm socks and good warm shoes. If you are running around in shlushy snow, you need waterproof shoes if you want your feet to stay dry. You can get winter shoes here that are like rubber boots on the bottom but you can also wear good leather boots if you waterproof them.

People are teasing you.

Buy your winter clothes when you get to Canada. We layer warm clothes and like to get outside. Wait until you see fresh deep snow under a bright blue sky!

1. Look for stuff with Thinsulate or down-filled. And a few layers to keep the heat in.

2. There is no lotion to prevent frostbite, only keepng yourself covered.

3. Rubber-soles will help, get a pair of knee-high Baffins or Kodiak boots.

I think Toronto only ses about -30 at it's worst, so any of the winter clothes sold in TO should suffice.

(had -50 out here in the praries a few times, and I have no desire to be north of the Arctic Circle in winter ever again).

I live in Canada. It can be pretty cold, but each year it gets warmer and warmer.
1.Make sure you have winter boots, a winter coat, gloves, warm pants (if your outside) and a hat. You won't need to wear all of this all the time, but you will have to get used to the cold if you previously lived somewhere warm.
2. Just mosturize. And those people are lying. There are not times when ears and noses fall off !
3. NO! Ive NEVER heard of rubber shoes with 3 inch heels to keep feet of the ice. We do have skates though ;) but those are for SKATING on the ice.

If you lived in the states previously and ever visited Vermont in the winter, Canada is like that.
p.s CONGRATS ! Toronto is an amazing place, especially if you LOVE shopping ! :)

I live in northern ontario. Toronto isn't cold! ha ha, but there is one rule above no other when you're trying to keep warm. It is this - always wear a hat and long johns!
You'll also need a winter coat and mittens for the middle winter. Because you're moving to toronto you don't need to buy special shoes. The snow doesn't stay in Toronto. Running shoes are fine, it's a bit too cold for pumps, but you can buy nice boots if you want to be fashionable. Whatever shoe you decide on, just make sure they are waterproof.

If you skin starts to crack (including your lips) put vaseline on the cracks. That works the best for skin that is already cracked. To prevent cracking put on a good body moisturizer every morning and wear wind & cold protecting lip balm and you shouldn't have a problem.

If you end up travelling north of toronto, make sure you have a good winter coat. If you drive three hours north of toronto, in January and February it is usually below -25 degrees celsius. Wear big, fluffy, warm socks and never go outside with shoes that are not waterproof. If you're feet are wet there is nothing you can wear that will make you warm. keep your feet dry! and mittens or gloves. If you're going to be doing any winter sports wear a scarf so that you don't get snow in your coat.

'how to get thru winter seasons in Canada?' - go South, like we do, LOL.
The only times ears and noses fall off like brittle glass is when you have extreme frostbite, which means you have been exposed to extreme cold outside, which means you are probably dead anyways, so it doesn't matter.
Get your winter clothes when you are here and settled. Down-filled coats or that thinsulate are the best materials to get. Since you are from a tropical country, winter will definitely be a challenge for you - always dress for the weather, and even though you might hate it, you will still be comfortable.

Get fashionable coats and boots =D

Be prepared to spend a good bit of money on proper winter clothing. Coats, sweaters, gloves, toques and boots. Somebody said to wear jeans and layers. Layering is correct but jeans are cold during the winter months so avoid wearing jeans if you're going to be outdoors for any length of time. Rubber shoes alone are a bad idea for wear during wintertime. Proper snow boots with wool socks will keep your feet nice and warm in the snow. If you keep your extremities warm (head, hands, feet) your core will be much easier to keep warm.

Have fun - winter can be a great season for outdoor activities if you know how to dress properly.
