How to rent an apartment in Canada (Calgary) when you don't have a job? |
Hello,
I'm French and I will go to Canada next year for 1 year.
I would like to go to Calgary but I heard that it is very difficult to find an apartment to rent if you don't have a job.
I will not have a job at first. I will look for one but I'm not sure how long it will take for me to find one.
Somebody suggested that I could stay in a hotel the first few weeks, look for a job and then when I have found a job, look for an apartment.
BUT this will cost me way too much money! I don't wanna do this. Especially that I don't know how long it will take me to find a job.
So I would like to know if you have tips for me to find an apartment to rent.
I have savings and I thought that maybe I could tell the landlord that I have enough to pay the whole 12 months of rent and pay the landlord the whole 12 months in advance.
Do you think that's a good idea? (I know that I will lose the interests on that money but it's better than wasting the money in hotels) |

You can stay in a hostel (such as Hostelling International) which is downtown and it only costs you $25.00 per night, and it is clean and respectable.
Also search: "Auberge Chez Nous" it is another hostel in Calgary for travelers who are looking for jobs, around $20-25 per night there.
Finding a place to live in Calgary is harder then finding a job, but it can be done. Better to look on Craigslist for a room in someones house, that will cost you around $500 Canadian ($350 EURO) per month |

Calgary is an expensive place to live and it doesn't have nearly enough apartments. Many young people rent houses and then sublet rooms.
Either way, I think if you offer to pay 2 or three months rent up front you will have no problem. Don't pay the whole year because once you settle in you may find something cheaper, nicer, or in a better neighbourhood.
If you are planning on attending school, they may be able to help you find a place or try Craigslist.

You do not need a job to rent an apartment. Simply look in the paper or ask a real estate person. It's not impossible to find a place, just very expensive. |

Its impossible to live without job in canada Because you will get bored. You must have job if you have job you can have good money if you good money you can rent a good place. where you have so much facility and no noise. if you have job you can do anything i mean buy a car and enjoy cold winter. |

Hard to believe that you are forced to have a job...i think all you need is to make sure you have income...or money...I doubt everyone in canada has a job who lives on there own. |

You can definitely rent if you don't have a job, but you would most likely have to sign at least a six month lease plus pay the first and last month's rent plus a damage deposit.
I am sure there are some exchange programs though. A lady I know has a someone from Quebec living with her for 2 months right now. I am not 100% sure how it came about, but there must be something on the internet you can look into. |

Just show the landlords that you have the money and it shouldn't be an issue. |

No, don't pay in advance. If you rent a house or part of a house and you pay in advance they might kick you out and pretend like you didn't pay them and there'll be nothing you can do about it. tell them you have the money, show them a bank statement or something if you have to.. and just pay your first and last, and continue to pay monthly.
do not give them all the money up front.
It might be difficult to find a job.. many people are losing theirs and most employers will hire a Canadian over someone who is only visiting just for the sake of supporting Canadians as long as both are equally qualified. |
