i live here. born and raised, 19 years old. ugh, its rainy and cold, but very pretty. http://www.lestwarog.com/pomaria/ is where u can find the apartment, but wow, living downtown is expensive. r u planning on buying an apartment suite, cuz thats around a million bucks. and renting anything downtown is atleast 900 a month. and as for currency: well... your american banks in the recent past have given out so many mortgages at low rates to people with a low income, that when time came for them to pay up, they didnt have the money, and had to file for bankruptsy. therefore, there r millions of houses in the US for sale, that arent worth very much, which is costing most american banks billions of dollars. my point is, that for now, the canadian dollar is about the same as the US, where before this happened, our currency was worth less. and just a heads up, if u dont already know, in canada, we have $1, and $2 coins, and $5, $10, $20, etc bills. also, if u dont want to be stuck going to langara college (which is okay i guess), u need to get good grades and apply tpo UBC (University of Britich Columbia), which would be the closest University to u. Other choices would be the SFU (Simon Fraser) downtown campus, or VCC (Vancouver Community College) which is also downtown. Good luck. Vancouver is great, so i hope u make it here. |

well, i live in Victoria BC and I go to Vancouver quite often. It's a great city! The downtown is surrounded by beaches, beautiful scenery etc, and the city has lots of things for you to do. I would suggest you visit Vancouver first and then maybe you'll get a better feel for the city.
Here are some pictures of vancouver...

I've lived in Vancouver since 2001. There are pro's and con's to every place you wish to live.
Pro's:
1) Weather allows sports all year round, jogging, cycling
2) Transit in the city is pretty good. It's only when you live outside the city it really starts to suck.
3) It's warmer than regular wintering cities (if you like the rain)
4) A lot of people smoke pot out here.
5) You get to look at the mountains and the ocean is right there. It's a beautiful city.
Con's:
1) It rains.....constantly. I still haven't gotten used to the constant rain, greyness, and darkness. Sometimes it's nice to have snow because everything is so much brighter.
2) Highways here are lame. The speed limit on the highways around the city are 90 km/hr (approx. 55 ml/hr)
3) It's a very laid back and relaxed group of people living here.
4) A lot of people smoke pot out here.
5) It's very expensive to live in the city and not a lot of rentals available here. It's becoming somewhat of a rental shortage.
6) I don't think it's multi-cultural enough. There aren't a lot of black people here. Most of the city consists of a more Asian influence. Asian, East Indian and Caucasian. I moved from Ontario, where there is a more diverse range of peoples living in the city.
7) The city is pathetic when it comes to having a good fun time. They don't even celebrate Canada Day---LAME!! Oh sure, there's the other places in the surrounding areas. New Year's Eve? LAME. They used to have a 'First Night' alcohol free fun evening, but they've cancelled that in the past few years. |

I live here, and I hate it. The publice education system is complete crap. It rains 10 months of the year. The housing is too expensive. When we bought our house in 1996 it was 1.1m, now there are houses arounds ours (smaller ones) that are selling for over 3 million. And not to be racist or anything, but I find Vancouver too multiracial. |

i used to live there. i went in august with my son for the night, and stayed in a hotel on granville.
it was a super experience. he loved the hotel, european style hotel near davies.
the bus drivers were so helpful.
and the staff at the children's hospital are always the best.
i would go again. |

For the first time in many years the canadian dollar is at least on par with the american dollar. Very expensive city all around. If you have a place downtown you are lucky. Beautiful park and sea wall and beaches in the summer. Which college at you going to. |
