I'll be immigrating to Canada soon and have got the visa . is it ok if i buy a laptop here? Will it work there?

For Canada, i wanted to buy a laptob from india . many people have told me that the laptops bought here would not work there . is this true and if not will there be any problems using the converter for the electricity?
Also , is the current in the US different from that of Canada?

Know-it-all
why buy a laptob in India when you can easily buy a laptop here?

Kenneth S
U.S and Canada have the same current, different from europe. I do not know what current is used in India. I am sure that someone at the store should be able to tell you and if they can't then that likely suggests that they do not know enough about computers to be selling you one. Personally I do not think I would want to use a laptop that was always being run with a electricity current converter.

My sister in the states (with 110 v) brought her laptop to Asia which is using 220 volts for all our electrical devices. We are using the laptop now without a converter. The adapter itself serves as a converter and voltage regulator. I think same is true if you bring your laptop from India to US or Canada.

Power in India, from what I remember from my time there, was 220 volt while the power in Canada and the US is 110. Other then the fact that your plug shape is different from ours, if your power transformer for the laptop says that it accepts 110-220 then you should be fine. All you will need to do is spend a few Rupees (dollars) on a plug adapter but you can buy a set in any airport, even in Delhi.

Hi,
It depends on the period you stay in Canada.
In case if you are going to be in Canada for more than a year, then i would suggest you to buy a laptop in Canada with International Warrnaty and in case if it is short trip and then i would suggest you to buy a laptop in India with an International warranty and more power should not be a problem as you can buy universal socket which will work anywhere in the globe..

I'll only talk about the lap top. Most new laptops power supply will take 50-60 hertz (cycles per second) and 110-220 volts right out of the box. What you need is the wall plug to the power supply cable, or a power supply made for north america (Canada & USA have same power grid), for your computer as the lap top actually runs on DC power that the powersupply converts from the AC in the wall. You MAY run into problems if you try to hook it up to an exteranl monitor, but I don't think so, but it is possilbe and it is good to be aware of potential problems.

You might find them cheaper here about $400 - 600 CDN. Anyway welcome to Canada

My 2.5 year old HP laptop has a universal voltage and frequency adapter ( 100-240v & 50/60 Hz ).So if you buy a new one it should be fine.
