I'm about to migrate to Canada... Is it ok to bring cds?

I've heard that the people in the immigration center (or whatever that's called) strictly forbid people to bring pirated cds. This is embarassing...but I have to ask. Will I get caught if I bring a few pirated cds along? (For Ps2 and some DVDs)

And another question, since pirated cds aren't allowed, are CD-Rs or DVD-Rs containing pictures and other files allowed to be brought there?

Welcome to the country that has not *yet* enforced the piracy laws that the United States have. While we are encouraged to purchase our media through retail stores, or online at places like iTunes, we will not be incriminated if we are caught with pirated music on cds or motion pictures on dvds.

In the United States, piracy law enforcers can "track" your IP address and find out if you are downloading illegally. It is legal for them to go into your computer and observe what you're downloading and how much. In Canada, it is still illegal to do that.

Basically everyone I know has Limewire, Bearshare, etc. on their computers and almost all of us download illegally. It's wonderful to not have to live in fear thinking that we will get caught downloading music and have to pay a fine. In the United States, that fine is upwards of $100,000.

So, my very long winded answer to your question is: Yes, it is o.k. to bring all of your cds into Canada. The customs and immigrations officers will be concerned about things that are forbidden in the country, alcohol, vegetation, animals, illegal drugs, etc. I can guarantee you that the immigrations officials won't care about your CD's. I have been on airplanes with my cds. I have taken them into other countries. The bottom line is that no one cares about your actual cd's. The United States cares about how you get them on your cd's (illegal downloading). The thing is, no one can tell just by looking at your cds and dvds if they are illegally downloaded anyway. They could have been back ups from your own media - done legally.

By the way - Welcome to Canada. :)

I doubt very very very very very very much that anyone will care about either of those

You should have no problem bringing burned CD's into Canada. I have never heard of anyone having a problem doing so. Maybe just buy a carrying case that holds them all together and put everything in that, if that would make you feel better.

Good luck and congrats on the move to Canada, you'll love it here!

IT IS OK TO TAKE THEM. BUT I RECOMEND YOU TO PUT THE CD'S IN YOUR LAGGAGE BAG IN STEAD OF IN YOUR HAND LAGGAGE.

I've heard the restrictions are going to be tighter in the near future at the border, but as long as you don't get caught, you're fine.

.....
just stick them in your luggage and they won't be ab;e to tell if its pirated or not. it'll just come up as disc's
