It would be a good idea, along with your driver's license. Most times you won't be asked for it, but you better have it along with you.

Heather M
It would be wise to have both and preferably a passport. I have seen people stopped with just Drivers Licenses.

Enjoy your trip!

RCrumb
It is best to have a passport.

I just visited the US with just my drivers license as ID. But read below:
"When you enter Canada, a border services officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, when necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as a photo ID. If you are a permanent resident of the United States, you must bring your permanent resident card (i.e. green card) with you. For more information on admissibility into Canada, read the fact sheet called Managing Access to Canada. It is available on our Web site at www.cbsa.gc.ca."

Yes you need a birth certificate.

If individual is a US, Canadian, or Mexican citizen:
- traveling by air MUST have valid passport to enter US (and therefore need one to enter Canada or Mexico)
- traveling by land or sea before 31 December 2007, must have proof of citizenship (passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND photo ID (passport, US or Canadian driver's license, or military ID)
- traveling by land or sea after 01 January 2008, must have valid passport.

If individual is NOT a citizen of US, Canada, or Mexico, must have valid passport regardless of mode of transportation.

Without having the proper documentation (i.e. passport or license/birth certificate combination), the border patrol has the right to refuse entry. In actual fact, they have the right to refuse entry to anyone without a valid passport, period.

Actually, as American, you can come in Canada as we did for decades. The laws might be modifiated in the next January.

The old good way to come in Canada (or going in U.S.A).
1. Best document: passport
2. Second frequent choice: driver permit with your picture on it. That is usually enough.
3.Third choice: a birth certificate fitting with your driver permit.

Then you convince the officier that you have a good job (where you live) then you don't intend to find a job in Canada. In fact, if requested, you have to prove that you don't intend to stay a long time in Canada.

Your chance to be accepted in Canada is more than high.
