It will be difficult for you but if you are determined to go you should try to hook up with some of the services in Toronto that assist youth. Covenant House at Gerrard Street and Yonge offers free temporary housing to youth. You can also check out Evergreen on Yonge Street just around the corner for services for unhoused youth. There are also temporary labour jobs with a variety of services especially in the construction trades. There are free health clinics in communities across the city where you do not need to have OHIP ( the government health card). You will eventually need to formally get a work visa or apply for landed immigrant status to stay in Canada ( you may have an edge as there is a shortage of skilled construction workers currently) but should have no trouble initially crossing the border as an American citizen so long as you don't state that you are planning to stay in Canada long-term or permanently.
Good luck and don't fall into the wrong hands as like any big city, there are lots of unscrupulous people who prey on vulnerable young people.

First of all...what are you running away from? Running isn't the answer.

There is a train that runs from Chicago to Detroit, and then Detroit to Toronto. It's the fastest route.

I think when you get there you'll soon find that your money is going to run out fast and you won't be able to find a job without a work visa. They probably won't issue you any legal documentation to work without a parents consent or proof that you are enrolled in a school there.

500 dollars isn't going to get you very far hun....
otherwise try and take a greyhound bus...
like i sadi though 500 dollars is maybe good for a week before your flat out broke

I don't think you can work legally in Canada, and you may not even get past the border, as they tend to really give young single people a thorough screening.

Stay in Chicago .... we don't need another welfare case in Toronto. Sorry. Ask yourself where are you going to live while you are getting a job. I'm sure there are jobs for you in Chicago. Whatever it is you are running away from will follow you here...just wait and see. Stay home and if you cannot for some reason, seek counselling for young people in Chicago. We have enough street kids here in Toronto who came with good intentions. They usually end up on the street.

you can not live and work in canada without the right permits and you are too young to get them on your own

you will also not get medical insurance
